Small consulting/hardware firm, 2 employees looking to add a 3rd for grunt work.

Massachusetts / Rhode Island, but not located in Boston (though 30% or so of clients are in Boston area).

I can get Sandeev to do that for 3 dollars an hour, a cot in the back room, and all the bubble wrap he can eat. Maybe you should think more globally before you ask for those outrageous wages.

The area makes a HUGE difference... I live just north of atlanta, where a 2 bedroom apt is $900 - $10 an hour would be 'acceptable'.. best buy pays their people about 10 or 11 around here..

How "limited" is you experience? If it really limited to the point you know how to swap out a card and install a driver, I would say asking for $8 is pushing it a bit.

It's not me I'm talking about.

That's probably about his experience, but looking to grow it more.

He's no dummy, so I think he could pick things up quick.

He's also not 18 (he's 30+) so it's tough to pay him only $8 per hour.

no it isnt... age has nothing to do with it.

where i work... the current entry level wages for a computer tech is...
(this is with an associates degree or 2 yrs equivolent experience...)
$28,910/yr = $14.78/hr

compared to a entry level with a bachelors and 1 year experience
$37,360 = $19.10/hr

This rate is valid only in harrisburg, pennsylvania.

Start low, always. If he truly appreciates his job and puts in 110% effort, then you will be able to see that and bump him up. I say start him at $10/hour. If he doesn't like it, he can always counter or walk.

Remember, it all depends on how much you want him. Do you think he will be a valuable asset to your company?

What kind of tech are you talking about? Just a part swapper? Or someone that roubleshoots, does network stuff ect? I make almost 2x what the 1st scenario you listed makes and I just have a high school diploma. Though I do support 400+ users in a mission critical production environment, supporting any PC, network, printer or server issue.

The first one is a Basic PC technician... No Networking/Servers involved...

Pc:
install windows + office + other software
swap motherboards & hard drives

Laser Printers:
Change cartridges & kits
Clean printer insides

On top of that there is a little analog telephone line troubleshooting

The second one has the ibm 3270 mainframe + networking + servers + active directory + some programming.

Also... these are government civil service jobs with full benefits, paid vacation/holidays/full health care(blue cross, prescription, vision, dental)/full retirement

$15-$17

8-11 is a joke unless you live in a town of 1000 people and have a tiny client base.

$11 seems fair, to me the bigger question would be are there opportunities to grow and advance.

I would say $11 and hour with benefits. I work at the geek squad and make $11.16 starting, and that is in the Milwaukee area. I had 0 PC tech experience, because I am a college student and am only 18. However I probably have more knowledge under my belt than some 2 year degree people have, as has been seen at my work :p

SO I say $11 is fine. If anything, bump him up a dollar if he starts complaining later on.
