I'm trying to calculate how much space i would need to store a DVD collection on my HTPC. What's the average size of a DVD? Without the extras and just the DD/DTS soundtrack?

Yeah the only one i ever ripped was the 8GB Godfather, scared the hell out of me. So you'd say the average is 4? Because i'm talking like 30-40 DVDs here.

Generally they are around 4 gigs. You could always convert them to divx, but then you lose picture quality, but then you could make each one 700 mb files rather than 4 or more gigs (it does depend on the movie though, generally they are inbetween 4 and 5 gigs, shrek was 5.5 I think).

DVD players don't compare to PC's when it comes to DVD output quality. And besides, there is like a million other things you can do when your PC is hooked up to a projector. Can you say giant-screen porn? :D

Do you have a dvd drive in your comp? Why not just get a program that will let you play the dvds? Most dvds even come with a program called interactual player or something like that. The quality of that is great, you are not going to see a difference in quality going from a dvd to having the files on your computer.

I'd say 200gigs MINIMUM.

Why not just get a nice progressive scan DVD player?

A 48inch TV is nice too. Gotta love Half-life on a big screen. My next goal: IMAX:D
