AVC Sunflower - 4000 RPM FAN??

I just installed one of these from PC Power and Cooling and the specs said it was supposed to come with a 5000 RPM fan. MBM is reporting it at running at 4000 RPM's.

Anybody have similar results?

Mine is currently running at 3900+, although when I installed it yesterday, it was in the 4200+ range. Maybe the discrepancie is due to the way the TH7-II fan circuitry or monitoring is set up?
Also, its noticeably louder than the stock fan, but I think the actual HS is better with the AVC, and in fact a similar style, with CU insert is shown in the P4 Datasheet and in Anands report from the Intel Dev. Conf.
I notice anywhere from 8-10 C difference in full load temps, and 3-5C in idle temps.
I read somewhere that a guy had used the Intel retail fan with the Sunflower and still got good results, about 1/2 of the temp reduction, I might check it out today.

Thanks for the confirmation. I replaced a Thermaltake P4 Volcano with the Sunflower and never even tried the Intel Retail until. I did not notice any difference in sound going from the Volcano to the Sunflower, so I guess I don't know what I am missing in terms of quietness.

I was trying to drop my temps just a bit to get to 2750, which I have not tried with the Sunflower yet. With the Volcano, it was relatively stable, but Prime95 would die after a few hours due to heat I assume. I would max out at 62C with the Volcano. I think if the Sunflower can keep me in the 50's, I may be able to run at 2750. If I could build this machine over again, I would have put in the new Alpha or the Swiftech, but these will require me to remove the mobo now and I am not about to take that on.

If 2667 is it, so be it. The TH7II is a great mobo huh? I am very happy. I have yet to not post no matter how high I turn it up. I always get into Windows (for a few seconds at least🙂)

Yeah, I really like this TH7-II. Still running at 2.1G(133x4 on the Rdram) but it's only been a week or so, going higher soon. This mainboard seems to be really stable for OC, gotta be the 6-layer PCB and "OC Strips".
LarryJoe, do you cool the Rimms? Mine do get pretty hot, but I've run the Prime "Torture Test" 24 hours and no errors, still haven't crashed it. Just wondering if it's necessary to add an 80mm above the Rdram?

AFA the Sunflower, I'm pleased, but as you say, If I felt like disassembling the whole thing, I'd go Alpha. I have quite a collection(PEP 66, PAL 6035/2 diff versions, and an all Aluminum, which is similar to the PAL).
I feel Alphas are still the best, and and I like being able to use all manner of fans with them. In fact, I have been using the relatively quiet Sanyo Denki 60mm with the above coolers and still got great performance.

I don't cool the RDRAM, but have been thinking of trying it. Unlike you, I can't get my Corsiar with Samsung chips to do 533, so I have to turn the multiplier down to 3X and run it at spec 400. I am using 2x256, but I heard 2x128 overclocks better.

The system screams and is stable. I am going to "try" to take a break from tweaking and buying things for a while and start enjoying it before I end up screwing something up.

Do you guys know if any mod is required to fit the intel retail fan on the avc sunflower? I like the quietness of the fan but also know that the heatsink isn't the best.

Or better yet, is there a way to mount the intel retail fan with a swiftech mc462 🙂

AFAIK, the Intel fan is the problem, not the intel heatsink. The fan it too slow (3000rpm) to keep up with the temps of overclocking.

Up above Ginfest says that he read of somebody using the intel fan with the sunflower heatsink and still got better results, about 1/2 as good as using both components of the avc (so i'm guess like 4-5C cooler just via the heatsink), but am wondering as to the mounting of it.

If you want a quiet fan and the intel fan keeps things relatively cool, then go for it. It is a matter of choice. I really don't know, I didn't install the intel hs or fan. The fact is that it is only a 3000 rpm fan, so it will be quiet.

There is a decent cooler roundup at vr-zone, check it out.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I think the intel hsf is not going to cut it for me attempting to hit 2.4Ghz (so far need 1.8V, although monitors show 1.76 under load), so I ordered my avc sunflower anyway 🙂
