"Avatar" wows early movie reviewers

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Director James Cameron's long-awaited "Avatar" wowed critics at its London premiere on Thursday, with some early reviewers calling it "jaw-dropping," "mind-blowing" and a game-changer in Hollywood for its digital effects.

Britain's biggest-selling tabloid, The Sun, called it "the most dazzling film of the decade. ... The final battle scene is 20 minutes long and absolutely mind-blowing."

Empire magazine gave the movie five stars out of five, calling it a "hugely rewarding experience" whose new technology "will give directors ... one heck of a sandbox to play in."

The London Guardian's Mark Brown wrote on Thursday that "Avatar" was "really much, much better than expected, (it) looked amazing and the story was gripping -- if cheesy in many places."

"The terrible film that some had been anticipating had not materialized. It was good," Brown wrote.

Cameron may really be the king of the world.

I will believe it when I see it. I don't care how fancy the visuals are, the actual movie is important as so far it doesn't have me interested

outside of Piranha II, I can't think of a movie that he was involved in that was bad--certainly not one of his conceived projects.

Still not holding my breath for it. I've seen critics rail on good films and praise crapfests. If reviews stay positive I'll go see it. All to often they take a big dive once the movie is out and everyone has a chance to review.

normally I'd agree, but from what Ive read, this movie was made for the theaters - esp digital 3d theaters. I will be seeing this in the theaters

IMAX 3D or bust 🙂

Variety review: "Cameron delivers again with a film of universal appeal that just about everyone who ever goes to the movies will need to see."

I've said it several times... I'm going to give Cameron the benefit of the doubt on the grounds that he yet to disappoint in a movie he wrote and directed. A director with a track record like his has earned my trust that he didn't create a stinker, until he has failed even once, I have no reason to criticize a movie of his that isn't even out yet.

It does look very cheesy but it's James Cameron. Almost all his movies have been very good. I won't see this on opening week but a week or two after. Oh and I hate 3-D movies. Just another gimmick just like motion controls. Every pair of the recent 3-D glasses I have worn have been uncomfortable as hell and really adds nothing to the movies.

This is supposed the movie that will revolutionize 3D in movies. I dunno about that, but I'm sure it will look pretty damn awesome.

I don't like the theme of the movie. It's like they slapped as many awesome-kinda things together it seems. ALIENS! SPACE! WAR! ACTION! PEWPEW LAZERS!

looks like garbage. They replaced a plot with fancy special effects. trash for douchebags.
