AutoZone 40 Piece Socket Set - 4.99

I needed a 3/8 socket set to use with a filter socket the other day. I saw that AutoZone had a 40 piece set in a slim line travel case for 4.99. The quality of the set seemed pretty solid. I doubt its stainless steel but it will hold up. At this price its disposable anyhow. I picked up one for each vehicle.

Their web site is pretty stupid. You'll have to visit the home page, click shopping, put in your zip code, browse to find the tool set, then you can order online.

That may work, but this tool set is impossible to find. Even putting in the exact name doesn't find it in the search function.

Hot deal, but you will have to drive to get it.

Notice I said Browse to find it. The search doesn't find it but if you take a path somethng like Tools - Hand Tools - Socket Sets
you'll find it. I had confirmed it worked before I posted above.

Like I said, the site is stupid.

Part Number Search on the left works... the part# is PSO40

Do not buy this set. For assembly of furniture, mabe even for assembly of bicycles it may be fine, but not sturdy enough for car maintanance. Tripple chrome plating will do nothing but fall off in big pieces if not done properly. Pay 5 bucks now, 5 bloody knuckless later.

Craftsman 60pc set is only $29.88 on sale now (reg.$59) guaranteed forever.

Note to others: Never used an freshly discarded 45 degree bevel cut exhaust pipe tip as a lever on the end of a 1/2 inch drive bar tightening brake calipers on your vehicle: The pipe can slide off and go through your upper lip and cheek in two different spots. On the upside, you can find out that you CAN pierce your lip, gum, and hear the pipe clink your tooth at the very root without breaking or really hurting your tooth in the long run.

I did almost the same thing. I put a 2 foot pipe on my 1/2 breaker bar and pulling towards me the head of the bolt broke. Pipe shattered my safety glasses and cut my forehead open pretty good. Don't pull, push. I tell myself everytime after that.

If you have kids that are borrowing and losing tools, this would be good choice. Otherwise, craftsman are the least expensive professional quality option.

When a socket breaks it takes the bolt head or nut with it. Stick to Sears Craftsman. Removing a stripped bolt is a real B&*%H.

FWIW, I have some tools from Great Neck. I have a set of 9 metric impact sockets that was cheaper than buying two Craftsman sockets alone. I think they're quite a good value and work well. I have one Craftsman impact socket to compare to, and the Craftman's walls are thicker. So much thicker that the socket won't fit into the bolt holes of one of my car's wheels. I still think the Great Neck sockets are fine though.

I also have a set of household tools I bought from Aldi. All the items in that set seem to be as good as most Stanley tools I have.

I have a tool set from Walmart made by "Mustang" that I bought when I was being ultra-cheap. That stuff is pure junk, and Great Neck's products seem much better. I think $4.99 for this set looks very hot just to keep one in each car.

btw. I did not post about this set with the intention of it being used to change out a tire. I recommend a cross iron for that. This is just something to have in the car in case its needed outside of the house, replaicng a broken hood latch, gaining access to a headlamp assembly, or other light maint work like retensioning a belt or something of the sort.

I think the quality of the set is great for the price. It should be able to handel any well maintained nut you might come across. In the case of rusted ones, well, it never fails that they manage to turn 1 hr jobs into 4 hr jobs.
