I really don't get this.. I mean a G35 manual is posing to me. I see a 4 door and am like... poor guy.. probably wishes he could afford a mid 90's 911 or even miata.

WOW what kind of logic is this? You see some guy in 4 doors sport sedan that he is happy driving and you feel sorry for him?

So you see some guy in an M5 , a 335i, an S6, an S4, a CTS, an IS350....etc and you feel sorry for him? People who like 4 doors sport sedans want the best of all words. Cars that will work for almost anything, going to the track, going for a fun drive, taking the family on a trip, taking clients out for dinner, bringing people along for a comfortable trip. What...should people that have such needs get a coupe as well?

Not everyone has the luxury of buying a car for each need and even those who can, can't justify the extra cost. Why get a coupe as well when your sedan is taking care of all your needs?

Sports sedans have been a huge success and almost every company is making them these days because to people they make sense. I drive a coupe daily, but now I have a need to be able to take my family on long trips and with frequent stops, every time I need to take a trip I am ending up renting a comfortable spacious sedan just because the coupe is too inconvenient. I am soon going to get me a sports sedan because after trying them out I realized that I get all the benefits without the limitations of the coupe. People who get coupes are those who are mostly interested in sports driving and nothing else, then it makes sense, but when needs change the car choice usually follows the needs for logical people.

Honestly.. I feel like the days of the shitty autos are almost over. It's getting to where the 4 doors with 6 speeds are just showing off.

Oh ya sure., it's impossible that there are people that prefer a manual no no no, they want to show off that's it. And no, there is no change like you are describing. Most import sports sedans have such or similar options and hell, now American cars are following that idea to satisfy those who need a sporty sedan down to the transmission....does CTS ring a bell for you?
95% of my commute is traffic. That's just reality. If I feel the need to 'wind it out' I'll take the motorcycle or buy a cheap miata.

Well that's your commute buddy, not everyone has such a commute. I know mine isn't like that in Ohio, plenty of road space for fun and what not, even on commutes. Even if the highway is crowded on occasion then I can take an alternative route that is a bit longer but much more relaxing.

How is the paddle shifting in these cars? I'm looking at 05+, and I'm hearing that the manual mode is almost as fast and just as fun as a full manual..

The paddle shifters only come in Sport-package equipped 2007+ G35's (sedan) and G37's.

In any case, on my '07 sedan, the paddles are a nifty feature, but i tend to go straight to the shifter when needing to shift.

I don't use it for daily driving, but do so for when i need to downshift quick to 3rd (it's faster to do it with your hand than just nailing the pedal, waiting for the car to react).

Also, with the paddle, to go to 3rd you have to tap the paddles twice. With the shifter, when crusing, sliding it to "S" brings it to 4th, you then have to pull back one more to get it to 3rd. I usually just slide and pull in one motion (imagine downshifting on a manual to 2nd from 3rd, or 4th from 5th...)

The transmission on the G35, especially on the '07s is actually quite good. The car has sensors everywhere to determine pitch, roll and yaw. If you leave it in D or DS, slam the brakes, and it will downshift for you and help with engine braking. If it senses you're about to turn, the gear will hold you through the corner and out of the apex, then shift either when you tell it to, or it'll just bounce off at redline (depending on shift mode).

On the track, i find just placing it in DS works just as well as in full manual(auto).

you've never driven a car with a real clutch

a real clutch being?

Full face metallic 11" disc and pressure plate that can hold 800 ft-lbs. Cable actuated.

Through a few miles of "idle forward one car at a time during red" traffic.
