Autoreply in Outlook 2003 running amuck!

Trying to help a friend whose business email account, using Outlook 2003, is having two frustrating problems.

First, everyday, for the last several weeks, his inbox fills up with "undeliverable mail" from addresses he doesn't recognize.

Second, anyone who sends him an email receives an autoreply with no message in the body of the email. My friend gets the email and responds, successfully, but his customers are confused by the instant autoreply (with no message) to the emails they send. He has to contend with extra messages from customers who think he is "Out of the Office" or that he tried to send a message or attachment and nothing came in the email. He has never setup an autoreply and doesn't even seem to have the functionality to do so, because he doesn't use Microsoft Exchange. On his Tools menu, he says there is no "Out of Office Assistant" or Rules Wizard. How can he being sending autoreplies if Outlook doesn't seem to support it and he swears he has never tried to use it.

He called BellSouth, his ISP, to see if the problem was related to their server, but the technician didn't see a problem. However, the tech plans on checking further into the problem, whatever that means.

The barrage of "undeliverable mail" sounds like email spoofing, but the addition of the autoreply problem, which started at about the same time as the multiple emails problem, is confusing.

Does anyone have a solution for either of these problems? I posted these facts on a Microsoft Outlook forum a few days ago and haven't heard a peep out of anyone. Today, I decided to post here. This forum has never let me down, so I'm looking forward to the usual great advice.

Thanks,

Download the AOL free version of Kapersky and run it in safe mode. It sounds very much like he is infected with some type of virus.

He has Norton Antivirus and a scan has not detected a virus. I told him, last night, to do an online scan, but haven't heard the results. Is there anything that could explain this bizarre behavior, except a virus?

Turns out the solution was turning off the "autoreply" not in Outlook, but on the server hosting his business account.
