Over at TweakXP I founf this solution to turn off Autoplay when you insert a new CD.

Turn off autoplay for CDs
Written By: whoisKeel | Authors Website: Visit | Views: 15095 | Print Tweak | 9/6/2001

1. Go to Start->Run->gpedit.msc
2. Computer Config -> Administrative Template -> System
3. Double clik Turn off Autoplay
4. Enable it.

However... when I type in gpedit.msc, my computer does not find a file with that name. I tried typing in just gpedit, and still nothing. Any help here?

WinXP Home Edition doesn't have a Group Policy Editor.

I can think of two easy ways for you to control autoplay in WinXP Home Edition. First of all, you can just use the user interface. WinXP incorporates a very highly customizable autoplay feature so that you can tell a given drive how to behave when a CD or DVD with particular types of files on it is inserted -- so that a photoCD calls up an image editor or a music CD brings up a particular media player or a data CD brings up a file manager. Just right-click on the drive's icon in My Computer or Windows Explorer and choose Properties from the right-click context menu. Use the dropdown selector on Autoplay tab of the properties dialog to tell WinXP what to do for a CD which contains the file types listed.

If, on the other hand, you just wish to put the total kibosh on all autoplay behavior, it's easier to just use the Autoplay controls in TweakUI for Windows XP. You can download it for free from the Microsoft site here.
