Probably because of some ad research model showing improved engagement or viewer retention if everything autoplays.

it's always been irritating, steam game pages autoplay some streamer playing the game, Twitch front page autoplays the top stream, video ads on popular websites autoplay as you scroll through articles

Firefox based browsers have a pretty solid autoplay block setting built in, and some chromium based browsers have it as well(Brave in particular I know of)

I generally dont see the popup video ads anymore with ublock or brave shields anyway. There are userscripts or extensions for both youtube and twitch you can setup to disable autoplay.
