I took my car into get my alternator replaced, plus some brake work last weekend. On the way, I stopped to fill the gas tank (gas gauge showed full). After I picked it up, I noticed the gas gauge is stuck below the pin that it rests on when the ignition is off. The dash is sealed, so I don't think there was a way for them to have been able to bump it unless they hit something while working on the brakes near the gas tank. This is a 1998 Chevy Malibu LS. Anyone have a suggestion for what I should try? I am somewhat mechanically capable so if you point me in the right direction I should be able to manage the fix, if it's reasonably easy, thanks.

You could take apart the speedo cluster and move the needle by hand, its kind of risky though. I would go back to the shop and tell them what happened.

Yep, if that's how you got it back from the shop, make them fix it. If they break it in the process of fixing it, at least they can eat the cost of the part. If you do the same, you'll likely be out a lot more money than they will for the part.
