Trying to determine the extent of what counties in America do, do not require automotive emissions testing on a regular basis.

We don't have it in Michigan where I live. I'm glad they don't because I've always had newer cars and I just don't see the purpose of getting a car tested thats less than 5 years old and hasn't had any modifications. In states that have the testing centers, I hear that there are always crooked places you can take your car to and pay a little extra and get a pass anyways. It just becomes a nuicensce and a way for the state to turn a profit.

I suppose I have no problem forcing testing for older cars or that have had any exhaust or engine customizations.

state of CA, you must do it before you even can renew your registration.

new car - exempt for 3 (or is it 4 now?) years
every 2 years after - you must get smogged again. you will be told to go to a smog check (where if you fail, it can be repaired on site and retested) or smog check only (it will only test, if you fail, you're semi screwed.)

I don't get why they say you have to go to a smog check only station. Why can't you go to a place that also repairs it.

I voted for you, smartarse. :D

And I'm not a hippy treehugger. On the contrary, I'm more than willing to log timber. But if I am going to be forced to check emissions on my four year old truck then I think everyone else should be as well. The current state is to allow the oldest, and potentially most harmful vehicles to be excempt.

..in most of calif.they use Smog II dyno testing and many older vehicles MUST go to a test only site. They do a visual based on a list of factory installed emissions equipment and if all that is in place they go ahead wit the test. Flunk the visual inspection.. and the test ends there. Otherwise they go ahead wit the dyno test for a pass/fail. Last time I tested my truck it was 75.00 but now the tests are over 100.00 and nobody knows where the money goes. It's turned into a racket of test equipment mfgr's and politicians screwing the motoring public.

i just renewed my 1998 honda, and they wanted a smog test only. luckily it only cost me 60 bucks but i still feel ripped off.

This still blows my mind. Here in CO they have to use the dyno and all that good stuff for 82 or newer cars, yet it only costs $25. For 81 and older they charge $15 because no dyno is used.

None at all here in Nebraska that I'm aware of.
I did find something odd in Colorado, though, my GF's brother in law has a newer full size Dodge pickup with the 5.7L V8... and it has a sticker that it's forever exempt from emissions testing.

Have to do it in the state of Georgia for every car this is 3 years old or older.

edit: Only these Georgia counties - Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale.
