agreed but a 1km asteroid would not be the end of everything, probably not even a 10km (although that'd be a hell of a hole)
Try this for size

Yeah no shit. Man, that would be insane.Originally posted by: Rubycon
Well if a larger one - 1km or more - is en route hopefully the warning time is a bit longer. :Q
Tomorrow's News:
Car-sized asteroid was only first of many - asteroids held in group by asteroid the size of England, to hit Thursday night. Nice knowing you Earth.

i did the worst case scenario and it still wouldn't wipe out the earth

This happens all the time. They usually just land out in the desert, ocean, or disappear down a mid sized chimney. 😛

That's probably true, but it would still leave one hell of a hole in the ground, and make some nice fireworks.Originally posted by: JohnCU

aren't there discussions out there which say that asteroid impacts are greatly over-exaggerated?
ie no nuclear winterish from an asteroid of 1km size
It would have to be a really large asteroid to create a nuclear winter, I would think. It would take a lot of material to block out the sun.

Put the ISS in front of it and use it as a shield
That's like dropping a matchstick on a table saw blade.

A 10km dense rock asteroid hitting at a 30 degree angle at 50km/sec would leave a 1,130m deep by 85,803m wide crater.
That would probably be noticeable. 😉 lol
What size asteroid is that?Originally posted by: Rubycon
500km from impact site:
Clothing ignites
Much of the body suffers third degree burns
Newspaper ignites
Plywood flames
Deciduous trees ignite
Grass ignites
Multistory wall-bearing buildings will collapse
Wood frame buildings will almost completely collapse
Multistory steel-framed office-type buildings will suffer extreme frame distortion, incipient collapse
Small bridges will collapse
Steel frame bridges will collapse
Glass windows will shatter
Cars and trucks will be largely displaced and grossly distorted and will require rebuilding before use
Up to 90 percent of trees blown down; remainder stripped of branches and leaves

It's about a 99% chance it'll enter the atmosphere, not impact the ground.

until it's gets MUCH bigger than a house , they are not much of an issue, and considering 70% of the earth is covered by water and only a small fraction of the land is occupied it's a pretty small chance of anyone getting hurt by an asteroid that doesn't cause massive distruction

I think you'd have a better chance at saving a pirated copy of Iron Man to a Snickers bar shoved in a BluRay drive before that happens. 😉

Nope. But ask the dinosaurs if getting hit by something that wouldn't destroy the planet is okay. A giant space rock doesn't need to come close to destroying the planet to be able to destroy all life larger than bacteria.
