Automobile sized asteroid heading for earth?

Rubycon

Madame President
Anyone hear about this?

I cannot reach spaceweather.com

Supposed to be visible in southern Europe, Middle East and eastern Africa.

Cool.

Most of it should vaporize in the atmosphere, I would think.

Unless it's made of pure iron? Then someone might be fucked. 😉

Perhaps it would hit a Somalian pirate then. 😉

EDIT: Auto sized is pretty big! I've seen them over the water making a hissing noise before and those were supposed to be the size of garbage pails. :Q

INCOMING ASTEROID: A small, newly-discovered asteroid named 2008 TC3 is approaching Earth and chances are better than 99.8% that it will hit. Steve Chesley of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory estimates that atmospheric entry will occur on Oct 7th at 0246 UTC over northern Sudan--just hours from now. Measuring only a few meters across, the space rock poses NO THREAT to people or structures on the ground, but it should create a spectacular fireball, releasing about a kiloton of TNT in energy as it disintegrates and explodes in the atmosphere. Asteroids of this size hit Earth every few months, but this is the first time one has been discovered before it hit.

Well if a larger one - 1km or more - is en route hopefully the warning time is a bit longer. :Q

aren't there discussions out there which say that asteroid impacts are greatly over-exaggerated?

ie no nuclear winterish from an asteroid of 1km size

Yeah no shit. Man, that would be insane.

Anything could be exaggerated. 😉

There's a lot of space...

Given enough time there will be interference.

I for one welcome our new asteroid overlords.

This is a cute story, but it does highlight the problem. We get hit a lot, we never see them coming and even if we do see them coming we have no options to stop them. There's a global killer out there with our name on it. The question is not "if?", only "when?".

Guess we won't need the LHC to do it....

And I guess we won't have to wait for this bailout bill either.....

Nor wait for Obama to win and become the antichrist.....

That's probably true, but it would still leave one hell of a hole in the ground, and make some nice fireworks.

It would have to be a really large asteroid to create a nuclear winter, I would think. It would take a lot of material to block out the sun.

Cant you say that about your life anyway? Everyone getting incinerated at the same time is no different than getting killed in an auto accident. You are dead.

agreed but a 1km asteroid would not be the end of everything, probably not even a 10km (although that'd be a hell of a hole)

Tomorrow's News:

Car-sized asteroid was only first of many - asteroids held in group by asteroid the size of England, to hit Thursday night. Nice knowing you Earth.

This happens all the time. They usually just land out in the desert, ocean, or disappear down a mid sized chimney. 😛
