Is it bad to plug an automatic voltage regulator (such as APC's Line-R) into a battery backup that does avr? I thought I read someone post the connecting them in series causes some wierd problem with waveforms or such. Any truth to this?

I don't think it hurts. It used to be common practice to put a power conditioner between a standby type battery backup and the load. If the PwrCond works well, the VR circuitry in the backup may never have to be used... You just need to be sure that the PwrCond can handle the wave form put out by the backup which generally isn't sinusoidal but a modified square wave. I would suppose that if you bought one from the same company as the backup then they should work together OK. Best Power used to make a Ferrups UPS that had a very good PwrCond built in, but it wasn't cheap. Best, Deltec, Exide and several other backup companies are now rolled into one and I think they are still making the Ferrups.
Just Google on it.

Yes there can be a downside if you have an automatic voltage sensing psu as I have (no 110v/220v switch in back). It is known that this wave change you mention, causes the psu to set an in-correct voltage, i.e., it 'thinks' when you plugged it into 110v it's reading 220v, = *poof* An expensive toaster that didn't last, LOL.

I don't think pcpowerandcooling makes them this way anymore because of this ;)

the psu to set an in-correct voltage

Yeah, but that would happen whether you had one avr or two in series right? I've run my computers power supply on the power conditioner with no problems, its the addition of the battery backup (with avr) that concerns me.
