Automatic Updates question?

So I have a Server 2003 and it is set to download updates and let me choose when to install.

However there were a few updates that were installed recently and i'm not sure how. perhaps someone did it manually, but what I was wondering is:

If that option in automatic updates is selected, is it possible that during a reboot that it would install those? I don't think so but I just wanted to check and see if anyone has seen this kind of thing before.

thanks -

There are certain security updates that can install automatically regardless of how you set automatic updates. This can be set via group policy whether to automatically install these updates or not.

That is good to know but if i don't use group policy on this machine, then it wouldn't automatically install anything if not set to do so right?
