Automatic update not listed in services

Picked a used Dell P4 with XP for my 10 Yr old son. It will not run Windows update and I don't see Automatic Update listed in 'services'. There has been no updates from Microsoft since the PC was new. Can I repair this or do I need to Reinstall XP?

Thanks,
Chuck

what is the error message you get?
Does automatic updates even appear in the control panel? maybe you need to install SP3 first?

Yes updates does appear in control and says its on, but I get the security center warning that it's off.
When I try to connect to Microsoft update from their site , I get code 0x80070424 and have followed some suggestions from there but nothing has worked.
I've installed SP3 from my thumb drive.

It was a problem with a couple of the registry files, its working now.
Got put on overtime so haven't had much time to respond.
Thanks for the replies. Chuck
