my vehicle a toyota harrier 1998 has of late started giving me some transmission problems. it began some 4months back wen it would at time fail to engage fourth gear mostly after I have taken a stop by the traffic lights thus traveling in the 3rd gear. After pulling off the road, switching off, then on would culminate in the car later properly engaging the 4th gear. it is an automatic transmission.

however, of later it has gone to an extent that it may not even engage the fourth gear after switching off. I will have to drive above 60km per hour then engage neutral, switch it off then on then engage gear and that is when it engages 4th gear. A mechanic suggested I change the ATF which he did after cleaning a certain component but still the problem is not gone.

now when I travel, it then causes an engine light to switch on especially when traveling above 80km per hour or when the terrain is hilly. what could be the cause. I do not want to continue paying money to the mechanics and the problem persists making me poorer each day by digging deeper into the pockets for an unresolved problem.

4 months back? Were you waiting for it to quit altogether?

You need to get the code read first, I would think.
