automatic sprinklers are stupid

it's been raining out all day... so why exactly are my neighbor's sprinklers going? 😕

if you really care that much about grass of all things, spend the effort and break out the hose when you need it, but it's been so wet this summer even that probably wouldn't have mattered.

Because it might not be enough rain to get a really good watering. Automatic sprinklers are the best way to ensure you get good coverage for your grass and they get consistent deep watering. Next house I must have automatic sprinklers, I may even pitch for one of those systems that monitors the soil to determine when to water.

I think so too, but for different reasons. People shouldn't be that damn worried about their lawns.

The one my dad, brother and I put in (over 10 years ago) had a rain sensor that caused it to skip the next cycle if it rained above a certain amount that day.

During the summer our lawn turns brown if we don't water it every day, including when it rains. Automatic sprinklers FTW.

if you live in an area where grass can't be supported naturally during normal occasions... shouldn't you maybe not have grass? looking at you, southwest US.

Using thousands of gallons of water to support an unnatural patch of grass in an otherwise dessicated wasteland is frickin retarded. People who choose to live in hellholes like that should be mandated to have only native plants in their yard. Who knows, this might even allow the Colorado River to reach the ocean again.

Word! I've done my part by not watering in over 4 years!

I've heard about those. Unfortunately most auto sprinkler controls these days are still mechanical and set to go off at specific times regardless of rainfall. I'd rather have a comp controlled one like the one you listed, but a cheaper solution would be to have one connected to a rudimentary computer (via usb/wireless) to obtain official rainfall totals and adjust the amount/timing of watering. I dunno....it is a waste to just let it run regardless of local rainfall..

Yup. I put in a lawn this year so my now 20-month-old kid could play on something with some give. The yard was previously all deck, concrete or brick. The grass is really nice for him to run around on, and he doesn't hurt himself when he inevitable falls down.

Auto sprinklers are awesome. It hasn't rained in months, it likely won't rain for months, and my lawn gets watered.

besides, it's not a waste as long as the local water source isn't strained. the water will go right back into the environment and ground water table and be tapped eventually some day. Watering lawns isn't a big deal.

Since I am on a hand dug 8 foot deep well I think I am pretty self sufficient actually.

If you want to argue self sufficiency I also have a wood stove with enough wood to last about 3 winters in storage, a vegetable garden which supplements our food intake, I could go on and on.

BC doesn't really qualify as a dessicated wasteland. I was talking more about folks in Arizona, Nevada etc.

jeebus, who would've thought a rant about lawn sprinklers would start ww3.
