Automatic Seatbelts???

Never heard of it, never ever, seriously! I'm from denmark, from europe, you know. Where we do things like making our own bread ourselves (heard of the concept of "bread machines" a few weeks ago. I was startled to say the least!). How does it work??? Doesn't it interfere with the person? How do they use them? Infrared? Onboard computers? Dear god, help me. I'm in a state of confusion right now.
I recently heard of things that make your chicken like you want it, isntead of an oven. Surprised as hell. What other stupid things do you have?

Basicallly, the seatbelt is on a track attached to the ceiling. When the door is opened, the belt slides towards the windshield to let the passenger out/in. As soon as the door closes, the belt slides back into place, covering diagonally across the chest.

my dads old mercury villager had it. they arent very safe... they give you a false sense of security. we never used the lap belt... :|

they are annoying as hell, plus you still have to buckle the lap belt. I could never understand WTF the point was.

They're extremely weak. I had a friend die because the shoulder (automatic) portion broke away from the car.

My first car (1990 Ford Tempo) had them, but the driver's side was broken. :roll:

In any case, I feel more comfortable with standard seatbelts. Do any newer cars even have the automatic ones? I haven't seen them recently...

Okay, i never new they existed untill i read one of the many seatbelt threads today. Thanks for the info.
I prefer the good old kind, if you say it's more safe, that's prolly why it's not there any more.

the reason why they aren't there is that people hated them. if you wanted to get your briefcase from the passenger seat you had to reach around a belt.


the reason they were there to begin with is the federal gov't made a law that said all passenger cars (but not trucks, which is why trucks never had them) had to have either an automatic shoulder belt for the front two seats OR an airbag for the driver.
