I saw this in PC magazine, it's a vacuum cleaner that cleans your floors automatically. Does Wood,Vinyl,Carpet, etc! You can even buy infrared devices that keep it from leaving the room.

These vacuums were about a thousand bucks in the past with less features.

LINKY

All the reviews I have seen have been great, my wife will love it.

wow! $200 isn't bad for a vacuum cleaner.... if it works well....
Somehow, I doubt this one would really do a good job in my house (one hour on a charge?) It doesn't sound like it's very powerful.

There might be a $50 rebate. Does anyone have a coupon code? Price match with Microcenter you can make $5!

Saw this at Sharper Image and I turned it on and put it on the floor and it spun around and around in a circle. Seemed useless as a vacuum but it may keep your pet entertained while you're away.

Give me a break, there are tons of people who have bought these and it's HOT! Good Housekeeping just gave it it's seal, and there are not rebates as they are flying off the shelves.

If you say so, my Sharper Image has a bunch of them and they weren't "flying" anywhere and if spinning around in circles is your idea of cleaning, then feel free to drop 2 bills on it.

Yup this is going to work out well.
And next year at this time you'll have a robotic housekeeper dusting and cleaning the bathroom too...

I have one, I have had it for 5 months now. It works well. It starts vaccuming in a spiral pattern then randomly goes rount the room and changes direction each time it hits a barrier, it has a sensor that prevents it from falling down stairs. The battery lasts for about 2 hours of vaccuming. In my opinion it does as good a job as a regular vaccum. It is less quiet than a regular vaccum but not by much.

There are three disadvantages os this over a regular vac.

1. Slow - It takes about 30 mins to completely cover a standard sized room. This is mainly because it goes in random directions, so it takes a while before it covers all areas of the room.

2. Random pattern - If you are a neat freak like me and like the straight pattern look on your carpet after a fresh vaccum then you are out of luck. Random patterns only.

3. Dust collector needs to be emptied frequently - This is because it is tiny.

This costs twice the price as el-cheapo vaccum, at $200 it is average price for a vaccum. It has a couple of disadvantages but does a decent job and saves you a LOT of time. Overall I give it a 8 out of 10. (10 being best).

You'd think that by now robotic household items would have been as common as appliances or household electronics.

...I remember as a kid back in the 80's when robots were a big deal :) What do you think happened?

Does it have to bump into something before realizing it's a barrier? I have a receiver on the floor and boxes and stuff I don't want moved. I wonder if it'll go around them.

So seriously, how does this thing perform in a room with coffee tables or around a bed? I imagine it would require a bit of supervision.

I actually have a friend who has the Roomba. It hits some walls and makes a loud clicking sound when turning. He had to send it back for fixing when it broke down for no apparent reason. Still- they covered shipping and repair expenses.

Does an okay job on carpets. It just keeps running and running over the same space to get it done.

Guys, for a pretty nice set of purchaser reviews- go over to Epinions.com & run a search for "roomba" - there are a couple dozen purchaser written reviews available to scope out.

Most are in-depth enough to cover or at least touch on all of the features (incl. stair avoidance & the cleaning pattern algorithim) & any negative issues ($200 consumer item simply does not equal $1,500 Germanic craftsmanship). Overall, IMHO very favorable consumer feedback though, if you acknowledge it is a First-Adopter item & the convenience + a bit of cool factor is what you are after.

Been meaning to get one of these awhile, since last Fall, & no Brookstone, H&S, or Sharper Image around close enough to me to justify a drive (and don't feel like waiting till May when become available at Amazon), so went w/ one just today. The $20 bucks off covers the shipping, so good enough to give it a try.
