my computer worked fine until one day i couldnt get an IP and it only gives me the automatic private ip address. I have tried ipconfig /release and renew but it does not work. it just happened all of a sudden. could it be a virus?

Most likely, it's a physical connection issue. Have you closely checked the cable to the NIC on both ends?

Is your computer directly connected to a DSL or Cable modem?
If so, try to unplug the power from the modem, and unplug the coax cable from the cable modem, let it sit for 3 minutes before you plug them back in.

If your computer is still pulling a 169 address, you might need to call your ISP to help you troubleshoot it.

powercycle starting with the computer(s) and work your way to the last appliance (cable/dsl modem?) and turn back on in reverse order. check connections along the way, can you plug into a different port. is the internet activity light blinking on the router and or modem?

On my Comcast setup (with an SB3100 modem), if the cable isn't connected or they're suffering an outage, my router will get 192.168.100.11 automatically via dhcp. So... when you say "the automatic private ip", are you referring to the default 169.x.x.x, or are you talking about a 192.x.x.x address?
