When I try Remote Desktopping to a Win2k3 machine (OS about 6 hours old, RD enabled under System Properties) I log in with a correct user / password and it goes:

  • Loading Personal Settings
  • Applying Personal Settings
  • Pause (no desktop view, just nothing on screen)
  • Saving Personal Settings
  • Logging Off

Anyone have any suggestions as to why I'm automatically being disconnected?

You have to use an administrators account. Regular users by default can't logon to a domain controller. And you do have remote desktop enabled on the server right?

This is on a different computer but same thing happened today. I was messing around with PowerDVD / graphics acceleration settings but for some reason I can't Remote Desktop into the Win2k3 machine anymore. I still have console access, just no remote desktop access.

Under My Computer -> Properties -> Remote
[X] Allow users to connect remotely to this computer

Just for good measure (even though it's already an administrator account) I've added in my user account under "Select Remote Users".

Under Adminstrative Tools -> Terminal Services Configuration -> Connections
RDP-tcp is started

Under Adminstrative Tools -> Terminal Services Configuration -> Server Settings
Licensing = Remote Desktop for Administration

Under Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> Security
Success Audit (for when I attempt to Remote Desktop in).

I still don't know why I'm being kicked back out.

How to give NON administrators Terminal Service (Remote Administration)

This must be done on a server to server level, If you require a lot of users create a GROUP called TSRemoteUsers in active directory and add your users into the group, then carry out the steps below. Ill assume we are only dealing with a couple of users.

Ill also assume you have Terminal Services (Administration Mode) installed and running on the server, if not open control panel >add remove Programs >windows componants >Terminal Services, When Prompted ENSURE "Remote Administration" is selected.

1. Using an admin account open a remote admin session to the server in question.
2. CLick Start >Programs >Administrative Tools >Terminal Services Configuration
3. CLick Connections
4. In the right hand pane RIGHT CLICK the RDP-TCP connector and select properties
5. On the permissions tab click "ADD"
6. Add your user/group in here and select the appropriate level of access.

If it aint working ensure you not in application mode (Unless you have to be!!)

Their is a local security policy GPO that limits the ability to log on locally.
It is called "Allow Logon Locally"

Add your group to this GPO for access.
1. Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Settings.
2. Double-click Local Security Policy.
3. Go to Security Settings, Local Policies, User Rights.
4. Double-click Allow Logon Locally in the right hand pane.
5. Click Add, Browse, and double click the user or group you want to add.
6. Click Ok all the way out.
7. Reboot your computer

Hope this helps

Did anyone ever find a solution to this issue? I just started having the same problem. It worked fine for months. I don't want to RDP with a user, just the admin.

Correct, you need to use the administrator account when connecting. If you want to use normal accounts, you need to setup the licensing server software and purchase licenses from Microsoft.

Yes of course it's enabled. Like I said before, it was working correctly for months. Now all of a sudden it doesn't. As a temporary fix, I have installed PC Anywhere 11 but I like RDP better b/c I can do it from any XP machine.

I haven't changed any configurations that I'm aware of. I haven't installed any new software. I may just go back to a restore point if I can't get this to work anytime soon. My event logs tell me nothing except that I was authenticated when logging in.

I've tried it as Administrator and as my user name which is a member of the administrators group. This is really odd.

I do have active directory, but im not using roaming profiles.
