Auto transfer files

My nikon d50 used to automatically open the nikon view file transfer utility as soon as you plugged in the USB cable but now it doesn't do anything. I went into autoplay and made its drive letter to autoplay it but it still doesn't work.
 
Have you tried reinstalling the utility? Sounds like it isn't working - it should have a process that starts with your computer.
 
yeah, i tried reinstalling it and i downloaded the nikon transfer program. neither utility opens when i plug the camera in.

its not a huge problem, just adds a few more clicks and some time.
 
I guess I figured it out. I was looking at the camera settings and there is one that can be set to either Mass Storage or PTP. It was set to mass storage so I changed it to PTP and when I plug it in, the transfer software starts up now.

What the heck is PTP and why wouldn't it work right while on Mass Storage?
 
maybe battery out for recharging too long or dead in the machine so lost your settings and defaulted, I have that camera but normally just pull the card to transfer

My battery was almost dead but it didn't revert any other settings back to default.
