Auto Insurance pricing is so screwy...

Well my mother has had me on her insurance policy for years, even though she was supposed to remove me a while ago. In this case I was actually very very lucky that I was left on. Otherwise, I would have had to file an SR-22 with the state etc etc, but that's not the point of the story.

Anyhow, while calling her company to have them fax some info to the state, I thought I would inquire about how much it would cost to have me on the policy vs not having me. The difference is almost exactly $150 per year. Not bad at all, especially considering that I currently have 9 points on my license (bad luck). I then push my luck by asking about a good student discount since I am doing my master's degree and have a 4.0 (just starting).

She then goes and gets some info about it. She comes back and tells me that it would save $200 on the policy per year! I am like WTF?! So pushing it even further, I ask if they need verification of my grades and if that is really correct. She checks again, and no verification is needed, and the calculations are correct, and they will take effect when she renews her policy.

So HOLY CRAP! Having a 23 year old on her policy with 9 points actually is saving her $50 per year... be cause he (me) is a good student (even though they are just taking my word).

Great great stuff! Anyone else heard of something this screwy?

You know, of course, that you will never see a penny when you file your first claim next week...right??

Well, I NEVER EVER drive her car, period. And that is all that they are covering me on. I don't officially own a car myself, so I don't have insurance with my name on it otherwise. The state is screwy and requires insurance in my situation to keep your license even if you don't own a car.

Obviously, it was more than bad luck. You don't put yourself in that big of a hole without making poor decisions.

Yes, I did make bad decisions, but they are bad decisions that everyone makes and only a select few get caught. Getting caught speeding in an area where it is the norm is considered (in my book) bad luck.

Going 75 when everyone else is going 75 = social norm.

Yeah screwy. How else can you explain (in my old area) a 19 year old woman with a wreck and 2 tickets paying much less for insurance than a 23 year old man with a clean record and a car worth less.

Ahh, so you are one of those who can rationalize their behavior with, "But, mommy, everyone else is doing it. Why can't I?" How old are you again??
And for the baby Jesus' sake, accept some responsiblity for your actions. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

let me guess, you drive exactly the speed limit, use your turn signal even when there's noone else on the road, and stop for a full 2 seconds at every stop sign?

No. But when busted I don't point fingers at you or anyone else. If I'm 20 over the limit and get nailed, so be it.

who exactly did he point fingers at?

he blamed himself for making bad decisions, admitted they're mistakes many make, but only some get caught for... which is the truth, and said it was bad luck that he happened to be one of the ones that got caught...it isn't like he said "OMG!!!!!1111one1! those mean police officers picked on me and gave me a ticket, omgwtfLAWSUIT? "

you know?

it is much more dangerous to drive slow in fast traffic than it is to drive fast in slow traffic... ... and about as safe as you can be (behind the wheel) going fast in fast traffic...
