Since we're sharing single experiences here I'll say that during the World Cup a group of skinheads were snorting cocaine in a park near the Reichstag.
 
A Nazi-like political party was the second-most popular political party in Austria in 1999. Extreme far-right ideals are rampant in European politics. I'm not surprised at all at the picture.

Oh please, that small piece of graffiti is pale in comparison to racism in other places. America still has some active KKK if I remember correctly.

dude i lived in Germany for 4 years and i saw racism and nationalism all the time. I was there when the wall came down and the west germans hated the Ost deutchers. In Frankfurt i saw many turks get their ass kicked just because they were turks. and if you really want to see a pissed german let them see a blonde ferline with a black american...

racism is everywhere you just need to know how to look for it.

I was in Hamburg and didn't see anything, maybe because I was lucky. A friend of mine was from East Berlin and she got along with all the other Germans just fine.

You have to consider the context of the racism. These countries are not America, where we are proud to be a melting pot and have a lower tolerance for racism after scars such as slavery and leaders such as Martin Luther King. There are been a big push against racism here that wasn't as strong in other countries.

Austria is made of Austrians. It is not as acceptable to some of them to allow immigrants into their country, and rightfully so. They never intended to be a melting pot and are more or less being taking advantage of by poor immigrants seeking higher pay. This is true of America too but remember our principles are not universal. They risk losing their cultural identity if they allow in too many foreigners, whereas our cultural identity is the fact that we are made up of many different ethnicities.

Maybe a more extreme example would be better.. pretend for a minute Cambodia was a first world nation and Austria was in the gutter. Do you think Cambodians would be welcoming poor Austrian workers into their country with open arms? Without any sort of resentment?

Racism's peak in America may be done but don't think the civil rights era here had as big an impact globally.
