The decision means that from December 1, cigarettes and tobacco products must be sold in plain olive green packets with graphic health warnings, such as pictures of mouth cancer and other smoking-related illnesses.

The World Health Organisation estimates that more than 1 billion people around the world are regular smokers, with 80 percent in low- and middle-income countries.

In Indonesia, the government said it would like to follow Australia's example. "That's excellent ... this is one way to protect the people," Health Minister Nafsiah Mboi told Reuters.

It is definitely very good news that cig packs will have no more logos. Good job Australia.

Yes, the worst thing about cigarettes is the logo, glad someone finally did something.

Next, retailers will have to yell at you and tell you how dumb you are for smoking when they sell you a pack.

It would help unemployment. "We are looking for a highly obnoxious, energetic individual to work as the tobacco annoyance officer. Job duties include yelling at customers, developing original, offensive elevator pitches, and general harassing of tobacco customers. Applicants should have no social skills, poor grooming habits, and a lack of respect for personal boundaries to accompany a strong, nasal voice. Job performance will be evaluated based on cigarette sales. Interviews will be held at the cigarette counter."

Finally a job for those previously considered unemployable.

lolwut!?!

What exactly is this going to accomplish? You think people smoke because of the logo on the pack? Wow.

yeah that will stop people from smoking!

Haha, yea, it's isn't going to do shit. I've never heard anyone say anything even remotely close to "Wow, I really like that Camel logo, I think I'll start smoking!!!"

I don't know, it might actually have an impact. I always think the same thing about advertising in general beyond just creating product awareness, but apparently it does work. It isn't like people don't know what Budweiser is, but they still spend millions on a single commercial slot during the super bowl. Companies spend huge sums of money just on little things like a logo. If it didn't have an impact, why would they bother.

my ex only smoked marlboro lights and if she did not find them in the store, she would not smoke. I am sure many of the cig smokers are in the same boat.

if my ex instead saw a bland olive green pack with pics of mouth cancer on it, there is no fucking way she would buy a pack of cig.

It may effect people choosing a particular brand, but it isn't going to stop people from smoking. People that drink already choose their brand, but I've never heard of anyone that doesn't drink choosing a beer based on the logo.

People smoke because they like to smoke. This law will have no impact on anything. They are bothering with it as it sends a message "I care about your health", but it's just lip service or just a PR move, and it's a waste of time.

Even after 18 hours of not having a cigarette?

People smoke because they like to smoke.

People smoke because they are addicted.
And nicotine is a bitch drug to kick
I'm an addict (alcohol) and have been in rehab and got to know a lot of heroin, meth addicts and they all say it's the hardest to kick
Breaktime was a mad rush to the little patio that was soon filled with 20 addicts puffing away

When I was in the hospital (cancer OMG I know right), I'd get up every hour, dress up in my 5 layers and push my stand with the bags on it down 3 flights to have a smoke
40 below, my lines would freeze before I could finish inhaling a smoke
The Japanese nurse nicknamed me Trouble, * Ohh here comes Trouble *
I would even whine that it was keeping me alive because it would make me get up and out while everyone else would just lie in bed
I hate tobacco with a passion, now excuse me while I go outside and enjoy another cool, soothing smoke

Man if we could do that with every bag of meth, herion, cocaine, etc people would stop doing drugs ! Or maybe they would become desensitized to the images and continue doing what they do regardless of what ever is or is not on the package.

All this will do is increase sales of cigarette holders. People will take the cigs out of the nasty packs, toss them on the ground as litter, and put the cigs in their shiny new holder.

The will only increase the sales of cigarette cases. Many people I've worked with over the years in countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Canada) that place the pictures on cigarettes pack choose to use cases.

Joe blow can do his line of coke, or shot of heroin, once a day and be happy with that
It's all about how addicted each person gets
Everybody I know who smokes still (very few of us morons left) doesn't do it because they enjoy it
It's just easier then quitting
I'm going to quit, maybe tomorrow...

What a load of shit. It's things like that that make people think it's ok.

Like putting kids in those "beer goggle" things and saying that's what being drunk is like. Then the first time the kid has drink he sees what a load of bullshit it is and wonders what other bad things adults have been lying about.

Well, each to his own

Most people can drink normally
My kids have shown no signs of alcoholism, and drink socially
I could not and had to quit

edit- On the other hand, I had morphine prescriptions up the yahoo and never got addicted
No problem just quitting it one day, when I did not need it anymore for the pain

Then again, addiction is a front and center thing with my family because of me and my dad and both grand fathers
So everyone is pretty well educated on the subject
I think most people know that tobacco has no positive side
None of my kids have even bothered to smoke tobacco

It's going to spur increased sales of cigarette case holders that's for sure IMHO.
