MSNBC Article.

I think this is an excellent idea however country with colder climate would not be able to follow suit due to the slow turn on time of fluorescent lights when cold.

I use fluorescent lights all over my house.

Anybody NOT using them?

I'm putting them in as existing incandescent bulbs burn out.

Cuba's Fidel Castro launched a similar program two years ago, sending youth brigades into homes and switching out regular bulbs for energy-saving ones to help battle electrical blackouts around the island.

The idea was later embraced by Castro's friend and ally, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who announced his own program to save energy and in recent months has given away millions of incandescent bulbs in neighborhoods nationwide.

I've switched over all the bulbs in my living room and my kitchen. Most of the rest don't see enough usage to switch until they burn out on their own.

I've replaced 55 bulbs in my home so far. Only a few left to go and they are the small base bulbs.

(Oh, and my garage door opener won't accept a CFL bulb and my outdoor post lamp is photo controlled via dim-up and dim-down so no CFL there either)

I recall seeing something on tv about a German scientist creating a dimmer switch for fluorescent lighting but, I haven't heard anything since. Has anyone else heard about it? It's supposed to save large companies with big office buildings a lot of cash on electricity.

I don't because I'm sick of the environment...

Actually, I'm slowly replacing the incandescent bulbs in my place as they burn out. Have three out of a few dozen so far :)

The biggest pain is replacing the decorative bulbs. The decorative CFL's don't quite look right and are pretty damn expensive right now (well, more expensive than non-decorative CFLs).

There's different bulbs. The first one I bought and have in the kitchen is a bit yellowish, so I chose a little more carefully for the living room and got some that provide a much more white color.

we still have a couple of regular bulbs but we're slowly switching to CFL. whenever a light bulb burns out, we replace it with a CFL.

100W is nearly too bright for me as it is...

I predict that this move will kill E-Z Bake Oven sales in Australia. ;)

huh? those twisty CFL bulbs with equivalent wattage are brigher. replaced my 100 W incandescent bulb in my room with a 100W equiv twisty CFL bulb which only actually uses 20W. and its brighter than my 100 W incandescent bulb

Yes I did.

Did you?

Yes, I did. It quite thoroughly answers the question "Where do knuckleheads come up with these ideas?"
That's why I was wondering whether or not you read it.

Your kidding right?

You mean, you dont see something even a little bit wrong with the government forcing you to use a certain LIGHT BULB? I mean passing a law that makes it ILLEGAL to use a certain LIGHT BULB.

Your ok with that?!

Government mandate to control the personal decisions of people instead of letting the marketplace handle it?

Wal-Mart is pushing CFLs now in the USA. People will generally make the move on their own when they see the cost benefits. No need to get the gov't involved at such a level.
