Austrailia, living there as an American?

Let's say I wanted to live in Australia or my job might take me there. Is there general despising of Americans in the land down under?

How tough would it be to get citizenship?

Well they make it especially tough for you to get in from the airport because of how they view how we are so uninviting to foreigners and how we treat them at airports. Luckily for me, my gf at the time was an aussie, I mean a shiela.

Which reminds me, know the lingo, it'll help.

They are not a nation of snobs like the English or of extravagant boasters like Americans or of reckless profligates like the French, they are simply a nation of drunkards.

We don't despise you so much as we ridicule you. 😉

Seriously, though, you'll find that a large proportion of Australia is reasonably laid back and tolerant. It's one of the reasons why we're a very multicultural society.

Although the American stereotype is that every American has a strong texan drawl for an accent and that you all carry around a personal armoury of handguns, shotguns, assault rifles and machine guns with you whereever you go and on the streets. Oh, and the media likes to make all Americans look like complete idiots. 😛

That's only true of the south.

Agreed. Wifey and I loved Australia when we visited there a couple of years ago. Very friendly people.

Yeah, but that can be said of any nation including America. 🙂

there is a general skepticism towards George Bush and Amercian foreign policy. but there is no general despising of individual Amercans imo.

I believe you are thinking of Ireland.

"Not remotely. Because iocane comes from Australia, as everyone knows, and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you."

LOL...awesome.

"All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me."

?

From everything I've read indicates Australia is 90%+ Caucasian and struggles with some very real issues with multiculturalism. Not to mention the riots in 2005.

WHAT IN THE WORLD CAN THAT BE?!?

You'll go from being called 'that rude American' to being called "the most suave and sophisticated gentleman in Australia'. 😛

I, too, would also like to know. I've thought about leaving the states and moving to Sydney (in a few years). I heard it's very very expensive there though, more so than San Francisco.

Also, is it hard to get permanent resident status?

Or you can just slowly build up a tolerance to a drug and put it in both cups, thereby eliminating the need for mind games.

/obscure?

What makes you think they are going to just hate you because you are American?

Because many people in foreign countries take this attitude. Not everyone is that stupid to overgeneralize like that, but most are.

Is it that surprising, given our history? We're viewed as imperialists, and in a way... we kind of have that reputation (today we're not setting up colonies, but our corporations are doing a fine job of spreading our culture around the world, and that does upset some people)

So Australians are Irish?

Oz is locked down tight as far as admitting foreigners to live there.

You might get in on a temporary student visa or if an employer argues your case for you, that you personally are needed to work for them there because no Oz citizen can do the work.

Or if you marry a citizen.

Otherwise, forget it. You simply can't just go live long-term in Australia (or New Zealand, where I once seriously considered moving).

Also, you almost can't move there temporarily and expect to get any reasonable job, because everything is unionized to the hilt. I mean everything, even up into management.
