The instructions doesn't tell you to load the modules, so make sure you do (but first make sure your kernel supports modules). Load soundcore module BEFORE the au8830 module. Good luck, vortex2 sucks on linux. When I tried it, it would lock my system up after playing audio for a couple seconds. Talking to others who have got it 'working correct', the audio sounds like crap. Simpler to just buy a cheapo $10 Esoniq card, or save up for a SBLive.

yeah vortex2 sound sucks on linux.

make sure you compile against the correct include dir. then modprobe the au8830 module.

No it doesn't. You just got to set it up right and apply the patches. There is a patch to fix the lock up issue with via boards. As said befor, sourceforge is the best place to start.

IMO, going through a hassel to get a quality sound card working is better than an easy cheap non-quality card.

<< vortex2 sucks on linux. >>

by "sucks" i meant hisses and loads of distortion.

it might not be the drivers (1.1.2 against 2.4.7 custom on redhat 7.2), it might just be the Diamond MX300, i wouldnt doubt it too much. although hisses and such were considerably less in windows

i just took my sb live out of my windows box and put it in linux. then put my older sb pci128 into windows. now i get great sound.

and i wasnt running it on a via board, i was using an abit bp6 based on intels 440bx chipset.
