This a question for anyone who owns the now unsupported Aureal soundcards, in particular the SQ2500.

Have you had any problems after installing Direct X 8.0?

My joystick hooked up to the gameport on the Aureal soundcard is no longer detected after installing DirectX 8. I have to disable the soundblaster pro emulation in Win 98 SE in order to get the joystick, but then I lose sound.

I have the drivers from last year before Aureal disappeared. Are there any hacked updated drivers? Or any other suggestions, other than reinstalling Direct X 7.0 where it worked fine.

I have a Diamond 300MX..and sure wish there was someone writing hacked drivers as we sure as heck can't count on the <expletive deleted> at Creative to do it. How do ya like Creative? They run Aureal out of business by making them defend themselves till bankruptcy with frivolous lawsuits, then add the icing to the cake by buying the remaining Aureal assets and then not supporting the Aureal-based card owners. That's lame.

Anyway, I digress. Have you tried to reinstall the Aureal drivers? I've had to do that with other installs of DirectX, and it usually doesn't interfere with DirectX when reinstalling the original drivers. Ya might want to give that a go. I haven't tried DirectX 8 as I don't have any software that would benefit from it as of yet.

I have the SQ2500 and use Directx 8, but don't use the gameport(I use USB). I have no sound problems except in old DOS games, since I also have the SB emulation disabled. Which brings me to this question: What games are you playing?

I was cruising around on Thrustmaster's site last night and they mentioned something about DX 8.0 having problems with controllers. They have a link to the DX 8.0a drivers that supposedly fix these issues.

I have a MX300 but I use USB instead of the gameport.

[EDIT] I just went and looked and they said it was a problem with USB devices. It might be worth a shot to download them anyway.

Thanks for the responses....

I am trying to play Mechwarrior 4, it is pretty much mandatory to use a joystick for this game, but it requires Direct X 8. (Thanks MS) I need the gameport to hook up my now ancient Suncom Talon F-15 joystick. The talon is still my favorite joystick over anything else that has come out lately.

Also tried version 8.0a, but no change. I don't think Microsoft in their infinite lack of wisdom ever beta tested DirectX 8 with my particular Aureal card, which I really like. Apparently I am being punished for buying from another manufacturer driven out of business by the competition's lawyers.

I also tried reinstalling Aureal drivers after DirectX 8. No luck.

I did disable the Soundblaster Pro Emulation and completely lost all sound to the computer after a couple of boot-ups. I wonder if I jumped the gun in blaming my disabled soundblaster pro emu?

I will try reinstalling DirectX 8/disabling SB pro emu again since I really want to play MW4.

I have SB emulation disabled also to free up an IRQ. That never gave me any problems. I just tried my Logitech Wingman Digital 3D on my gameport and it works fine.

If you have to install drivers for your stick, are they DX8 compatible?

What version of Aureal's driver's are you using?

Thanks for the vortex of sound site. They have the same solution posted over there regarding Microsoft's new joystick.vxd file. Supposedly, MS said they are not supporting Aureal's last drivers, version 2048, with Direct X 8.

I have searched M.S.'s site repeatedly looking for this "fast computer joystick.vxd" file. Microsoft's web site is about the most un-user friendly site when it comes to finding little things like the file I am looking for. Hmmm, sounds alot like their software, for that matter. At least they're consistent. :)

If anyone cannot provide a link, can someone e-mail me this particular file?

Thanks in advance

I have the Aureal SQ2500 with the 2048 drivers and DirectX 8.0. I have no issues with sound or controllers. Must be something in your system ? I'd uninstall then reinstall the sound card drivers.
