Pompeii buried by Vesuvius, apparently to punish the debauchery that made the town famous. Tens of thousands of people perished only to have plaster casts made centuries later of the hollows their bodies once occupied.

Even if the Romans kept records, the calendar was notoriously 'drifty' then, depending on who was in office, etc....

What do you mean, "if" the Romans kept records ? And they may have changed the names of the months, or added days or new months, but that doesn't mean it can't be kept tracked of.

What do you mean, "if" the Romans kept records ? And they may have changed the names of the months, or added days or new months, but that doesn't mean it can't be kept tracked of.

Okay "if" they kept specific enough records and these records survived....

The date shifted little by little over the years, due to inaccuracies in the calendar, local changes, etc...
