If this were the equivalent of car audio, these would be Legacy speakers.

The room I'm planning to use these in is 12ft wide by 10ft deep. Trying to build a decent home theater on a budget. Now I just need to find a Dolby Digital Receiver for about $110 to get the whole shebang for $200. That should be cheap enough to not piss off the wife 🙂
 
These look comparable to the AUDIOSOURCE 100 Series from last year (also sold online and at COSTCO).... With that in mind take a look at some of the reviews for those speakers at AudioREVIEW
 
these are of lower quality but better sounding than most TV speakers. They make some fairly good powered subs too. I am going to Costco today
 
I just picked up the KLH R-5000 Dolby Digital Receiver from Best Buy for $109.60 on an Open Box Buy. Only missing box and manuals. It's got 3 S-video inputs and 1 S-video output, 6-channel direct input, Optical and Coaxial digital inputs, and 500-watt total power output.
Here's a Link to the product description at Best Buy with a good set of pictures of the unit. It says $179.99 on the website but the price in-store for new units is $161.50 on clearance.
 
I have a cheap orintron dvd player. I am a little confused about why exactly do I need a reciever for? Cant I simply attach the sepeakers directly to the dvd player?

Actually, since Phoenix Gold makes them, they would probably not be considered crap. I actually picked up a pair of the book shelf speakers of there's... I dont recall the model of hand, and I was VERY impressed with the Sound Quality at such a low cost.

The receiver is the boss of all your audio/video components. It manages all the signals. Essentially, you hook up all your speakers to your receiver, then you can hook many other devices up to your receiver so they all utilize the speakers. Let's say you have a PS2, DVD player, VCR, TV: all would go into the receiver. They also add features like 5.1 sound, Dolby Digital, etc.
 
i have a few questions.. for one, where did you see this for this price.. second, is it at your local costco or is it at all costco's, and finally even though its not a question, i don't see this system on costco's website =/
 
Well I saw the set at my local Costco, but unfortunately I just haven't had the time this weekend to visit every CostCo in the country to verify stock 🙂 I know that there was some talk on here recently about a 36" HDTV from RCA w/VGA input at CostCo but I didn't see that TV at my local store, so I'm not sure how they handle stocking items on a nationwide basis.

Edit: The location I saw them at was in Norfolk, VA.
 
HMM even if the speakers and sub are crap, id rip out the 100w amp and power a REAL driver hehe. afaik home audio manufacturers are required to print the RMS output so its 100 real watts.. however the reliability would still be questionable..

oh and i think decent amps usually go for around $1 per watt
 
well, i just got back from costco and bought it for $89.99, im in the northeast jersey area and it was the last one they had left... now i just need to buy a cheap but decent receiver... any suggestions?
 
reddog, did you ever find a receiver to use with these speakers? If so, how do they sound? I bought my open-box KLH receiver for $109 on Saturday at Best Buy and noticed in their Sunday ad that they were offering a free center channel and 2 rear channel speakers with any purchase of a dolby digital receiver. So I took my receipt in and they said just go get the free speakers, bring them up to the desk and we'll give you a new receipt showing you got the speakers for free with your receiver! Since I already have a pretty decent set of main front speakers I figured all I needed was a subwoofer. In my search I stumbled upon an open box KLH 10" 120-watt subwoofer for $79 so I picked that up instead of the audiosource set for $89. I'm still playing around with it, and am curious to hear how the audiosource sound.
