7800s kick ass, using them right now. Great bass, and great clarity.

Was a bitch to find, but now I'm selling them. Not to hijack the thread, but anyone can PM me if youre interested.

There was some mention of the offerings from Monsoon, such as the MM-700/702. I just recently upgraded from the Monsoon MM-700 to the Swans M200, so am familiar with both.

skriefal, you mean those Swans by Diva ones? Wow, that's awesome I've always wondered if anyone on this board had them. How much did you pay and are they really kickass?

the logitechs, which i own, were recently on sale for less than $140 shipped, i think you missed it.
you should be able to get them for pretty cheap, a lot less than the retail $200, try buy.com
but like some people said, you should definitely go to a store and listen to them and compare
if you don't see any difference go with the klipsch, they have the best reputation for speakers... 5.1's are amazing if you had the money...

the THX is nice to have for movies...
but be sure to pair your speakers with a nice sound card like the TB santa cruz

Yeah, i never really thought about getting Bostons cause they didnt seem to get talked about very much. Doesnt gateway package the 7800's with pc's alot? Dunno if thats a good thing or a bad one ;) I'll deffinitely look into those too. Pretty much looking into everything anyone suggests. Do the swans come with a sub woofer? I am not sure if thats going to matter with the swans design, but i would think it would be desireable to have a sub also.

skriefal: have you heard anything else compared with the monsoon speakers?

workin': hahahahaha :) yes it was amusing :p thanks for the detour

Well, hehe, my text wording was a little tricky. Its a sony surround SPEAKER system...but the receiver is probably affordable for anyone on this board. Its a kenwood VR-305 surround receiver. The speakers are sony and are SS-U3033 boxshelfs center channel (no place for it right now) and satellites.

-unity

edit: satellites are ss-sr30 model ... all speakers in same set.

I have the Logitech Z-560s and they're kickin speakers! My Subwoofer puts my brothers Klipsch's sub to shame. I compared these to my brothers 300 dollar Klipsch 4.1 system and I think for the price you pay for the Logitech its no contest. Subwoofer gives you enough power to rock your house and your Neighbors, the Satellites give crips clean sound. But becareful I have read some reviews on people who have complained that their subwoofer and amp started smoking because they cranked it up too high. probably users fault though. Happy shopping!

BD2003 has a great deal on the 7800's they will kick serious a$$ because I doubt you will be able to find them apart from a gateway country store and the $249 price tag unless you buy used

a little OT but you can get a Santa Cruz and logitech z540's for $80 at compusa this week with no rebates at that price nothing can even touch it

they are only mediocre speakers IMO tho but its a great price for em

I was looking into the Z560s and 641 by Altec. I like my "boom" in my music, movies and games and you do get lots of "boom" with the Z560s. RMS for them is 188W far more then the 641s. I heard both the 641 and Z560 (although the 641 were in a big store so the music quality is less then in a small bedroom for example) but although they were impressive I liked the Z560 better, much better. I have read a review (did my research b4 my purchase) on THG (I think) and what it said was that the 641 are better for music, leaning more towards classical, although the Z560s were excellent too - probably better for techno, hip-hop etc.

Spec wise the 641 are better, but that is only on paper. You will not be able to hear the difference that much. I had a very hard choice between those 2 but I have picked the Z560 because not only they were more pleasing to my eye, but also I liked the constuction of them better (more convincing the the 641), the weight of them (meaning biger magnets inside speakers = more richer, powerful shound) and the fact that they were THX approved.

When it comes to THX I agree with this comment 100%..........

"More specifically, in the multimedia speaker market, I can confidently say that there are other speakers out there that would meet the THX Multimedia requirments to become THX certified; however, many manufactures decide that the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ required to get their speakers certified could be used elsewhere. Let it also be said that Klipsch doesn't get all their products THX certified ... just like Sony, Onkyo, Harman Kardon, et. al.

THX does guarantee that the product will perform at a "high level," but other products not carrying the certification may perform equal to or better than the certified product. Therefore, the argument that THX is nothing more than just a marketing strategy could be considered somewhat true."

.... but the THX also serves its purpose. Aside from the fact that it makes me happy to have the THX sticker on my speakers, I think that the THX certification gives you a piece of mind that the product that you are buying is good. This is useful for people who do not have the time or brains to do their research and rather pay the money for the convenience. I did my research, I knew that the THX is good but not Godly and that it might be a marketing tric to attract customers - I still bought it, why? because like I said b4, (call me stupid) but I just like to have the THX plastered on my speakers, that's all.

I hope that you come with the most suitable decision that fits you best. It all comes down to price, appearence, brand name, and looks (as the spec side is almost the same). Since you rulled out the Klipch speakers, my advice to you would be to listen to the other 2, and if you think that they both sound excellent (cuz they do) look at little things like speaker shape/design and pic the winner according to looks (after all we do the same thing with girls ;) ). Good luck.

Yes, I'm referring to the Swans "by Diva" M200s. Normal price is $299 for the pair, but they're currently "on sale" for $199 at AV123.com. Shipping isn't cheap, though, as they're quite heavy -- cost about $40 for next-day DHL shipping to Minnesota. The shipping weight was about 40 lbs!

I don't play games -- at all -- so I can't comment on that. But they're great for music, and are vastly superior to my old Monsoons. They also look much nicer, with the nice wood side-panels. And don't worry about the lack of a separate bass module -- it isn't needed.

They're not small, of course, so you'll need more desk space than most other tiny computer speakers require -- but it's worth it IMHO.

I have the Z560's and if you're into sound quality, don't buy these things. The bass is way too bloated and boomy. I was just talking to someone privately on these forums and he has the Altec 641's that he seems to love. I'd probably pick the Z560's if you want to piss off your family members, neighbors are if you are into scaring the cat. Actually, the are pretty decent for games because most of the sounds are computer generated anyway and the sub does have some impact.

THX certification is a joke, even with high end audio. You just end up paying extra for the cert, which means nothing.

The Monsoon's sound good, but they are way too directional IMO. I bought and returned a pair because unless you are in the sweet spot, there are no upper mids or highs. The pair I bought didn't have adjustable stands, so I had to put some jewel cases under the stands just to position them at my listening height. I thought that was rediculous, so I returned them. Even with the adjustable stands, I wouldn't like the idea of having to sit right in the sweet spot all the time at my computer. I like to move around my room and have music playing in the background and the Monsoon's sound like crap for that application.

I've never been a fan of Klipsch, even though they do usually make a quality product. When I saw a set in person at Best Buy, I was really dissapointed with the quality. If they were typical Klipsch quality, I'd pay the extra money for them, but they are cheaply made and not worth the extra money IMO. I thought that the bass was a bit boomy as well (not a typical trait of regular Klipsch speakers), but not as bad as the Logitech's.

I did like the Boston Acoustic BA790's and probably should've stuck with those. It had the best sub IMO. The tightest and most musical. I haven't heard the new Altec Lansing 641's, so I couldn't tell you, but I'd certainly give them a listen.

Its Diva by Swans, not Swans by Diva, and the Divas are HT/hifi speakers rather than computer/multimedia speaker, and as such, they are unpowered, making them useless to a computer soundcard line level output. The M200's are however Swans foray into the computer/multimedia speaker market. Its a basic set of 2 way stereo speakers, but the quality shows, and given its price, its extremely attractive.

hope you find this article helpful...

it seems like the Z560 is all about bass and loudness while the Altec Lansing is all for clarity and crispness. (humm.. how bout hybriding the Z560 sub with Altec's satellites? :) )

anyway, MChammer, you have the BA 4800 right? how you like it? I love mine too, but they can't get loud enough :(
(of course, under normal circumstance I would NEVER turn the volume knob pass halfway; but when my friends are over and I want to impress them, I have to goto Windows Volume Control push the bar to the top, turn the volume/bass knob all the way, and gather their ears around the sub, then they MAY get abit "whao"-ed, so much effort for so little bragging rights, unlike the Klipsch v2.400 I had, all I need to do is play Rouge Spear or Counterstrike and twist the knob 3/4 all the way and cops will show up at the door in no time)
