Audiophiles: best headphones?

I hope everyone had a nice labor day, and did very little in the way of labor.

I am looking for a good set of headphones for use at my desk. I am in NY and have access to every retailer within a few miles, and would prefer to drive than buy online so I can have tunes at my desk tommorow, I'm looking for a pair that fits well, I have a huge head and big ears, and they have to sounds exquisite, i'll pay up to around 100 bucks for them.

Starting to go nuts with songs stuck in my head.

Grado SR-60s come with the better pads Viper. The SR-80s are better but dont have the sweet pads. I have the SR-80s and they are amazong. you can get them for round 80-90 online. so you could get them fort round 100 in a store.

My SR-60's came with the regular pads that cover the entire driver.

Sounds like the pads I bought for my SR-60's are the ones that come with the SR-80.

I like them better, & the general consensus seems to be they sound better (though I never did any critical listening with the stock pads, my first pair was defective & the second pair I never even bothered to do the comparison).

I have two extra sets of those pads if anybody wants them.

ahh. because alot of peopel complain that teh ones on teh 80s are uncomfortable and tewh 60s feel better after long periods of time

thanks for the reccomendation guys, but where can I find them retail? I just checked CC and BB websites as well as Radio Shack, no sign of anything made by Grado on their sites. High end headphones are made by Bose on their sites.

Those Grados are open though, so everybody around you will hear what you're listening too.
If your friends are bats . . . (literally) . . . or you crank them well above ear-damage volumes. 😛

another vote for the Grados ($65 shipped online . . . do that SEARCH).

Here, lazy bum.
(Q audio is reliable and you can drive to MA) 😛

Just got them in yesterday, have 'em at my desk this very moment. They are so much better than I could have hoped, and they were only 60 bucks. Thanks a ton AT!

any recommandation on non vented headphone?

I need to use it in my office at work, and I do not want to distrub my officemate.

Thanks

I have the 60s and I don't find them comfortable for listening for very long. They (and the 80s even more so) have a reputation for excellent sound, but I think comfort is at least as important. Even the best sound is spoiled if the headphones aren't comfortable. Therefore, I got a set of Sony MDR-7506. I did a lot of research online and these have been around a long time and have scads of believers. These are studio quality and a lot of professionals use them and for hours and hours. Do some online searches in Google Groups and you will see what I mean. They are over the ear, not on the ear like the Grados. What's more, they are obtainable for under $100. I got mine for around $95 shipped.

How much are you looking to spend? I hear great thing about the Sennheiser HD-212s. You can get them for under $50 as well. I'm looking at to get either a pair of AKG K271 Studios.. they go for about $180 though.. Still deciding between that or the Sennheiser HD-580s. Really depends if I want an open or closed headphone.. just wish I could find a retailer around with the AKGs so I could hear them first.

Sony MDR-7506. The newest model just came out that has a bigger driver but I suggest the older 40MM because I hear the 50MM gives too much bass.

How can you tell which you have? I got mine about 2 months ago online.

these are supposed to be awesom. More info at www.etymotic.com. DO NOT BUY BOSE.

That would be Etymotic Research ear buds. Are those the new ones? I have the ER4S, which are more expensive but fantastic. Excellent fidelity and hard to beat for keeping sound in and out. $269, though.

If you can find the MDR-V6 headphones, they're the same as the MDR-7506 but with 40mm drivers for sure. IIRC
