I am curious if there is any software that will allow this.

Basically, what I want is a program to use a different computer on the network as a speaker ...

So i can sit on my couch with my Vista laptop, open my Rhapsody account, and play songs through my Gentoo HTPC box that has a very good sound system instead of my crappy laptop speakers.

So the catch is I can't play the songs in VLC or any other third party programs.

Edit: Looks like VLC can stream the input to your audio card, so it should work for my purposes. I'll experiment when I get home and let y'all know.

Turns out it's unpossible on my computer. Lenovo crippled the built in sound card to disable the "WaveOut" or "Stereo Mixer" capture device, apparently Dell, HP, others did the same (though Dell apparently backed off on it) under pressure from the RIAA, because it was the easiest way to "steal" music from sources like pandora.

Lenovo has said that it's crippled in hardware, and they can't release a driver fix.

I wish I had known this before I bought my computer. I've got a perfectly legit use for the option (using the larger speakers of my HTPC instead of the speakers on my laptop).

dammit. (exploring other options)
