Audio reciever/DVD advice needed

Okay here's the situation.

Three years ago I acquired a nice HT-in-a-box setup with a Yamaha receiver paired with 6 speakers for a modest home theater setup. It cost me about $500 at the time.

Two years ago I finally saved enough to buy a Toshiba DVD Player to go with this receiver. Unfortunately the receiver didn't have Dolby Digital/DTS onboard so I had to get a DVD player with an onboard Dolby Digital Decoder. No biggie, sounded fine to me and I was happy.

Then one year ago my roommate buys a newer Yamaha HT setup with Dolby Digital/DTS on the receiver paired with a Sony DVD player. Needless to say his setup blows mine out of the water. The difference in clarity between onboard decoding and receiver decoding is astounding. But I don't wanna upgrade since I've already put some cash into my existing system.

Fast forward to the present. Due to a freak power accident, my DVD player gets fried since it isn't behind a surge protector. Now the question arises. What do I do?

Here's my choices as I see them:

1) Buy a new DVD player with onboard dolby digital/dts decoding .
2) Buy a new receiver with built in decoding and buy an Xbox with its DVD capabilities when its released.

Keep in mind I'm a poor college student so option will have to wait quite some time (at least 2 months).
If I decide to go with option 2, I need some recommendations on a good receiver. I know there are those who think anything less than a $3000 Marantz/McIntosh system isn't worth it. But like I said, I'm not an audiophile, but I like good stuff. Here's some basic requirements I have

1) I won't accept anything less than Yamaha (this means no Sony, no Pioneer, no Kenwood). I know these brands can beat Yamaha but the price at which they do so is not within my range.

2) The main brands I'm looking at are Yamaha, Harmon Kardon, Denon :)D), and the like.

Whew, okay there is my lengthy post....fire away anandtechers :)

Thats the one my roommate has, the HT5240.

The only reason I'm shying away from it is because I want something with a little more output power. Next summer I plan on upgrading my little HT-in-a-box speakers into a real HT setup. I need a receiver that will provide enough power for this expandability.

Buy a new Yamaha reciever and a DVD player (not the xbox - i have doubts on the quality). Atleast that is what I would do.

Does anyone know of any current deals on these receivers that you're recommending? I'm looking to spend under $400 after shipping.

Buy an Onkyo 494, Denon 1601/1602 or Yammy RXV-420 (I have the 520, great little unit, although slightly bright) and a pioneer or panasonic DVD player...should set you a little over $400 bucks and use your existing speakers till you can afford better ones. Don't get hung up on 'wattage' ratings....the receivers I listed have heaps of power, despite their 'measly' 60-75 watts ratings! :)

<< how does this one look?

Denon AVR-682

Looks good...seems to be the 'same' as the 1802 (it includes S-Video inputs)...Denon's have a nice warm sound...plus it's pretty cheap, you can get a dvd player for just over $100...there is a thread floating around here somewhere about one...

I'd recommend my Funai DVD player that I got on sale at Target for $55.. It works and that's all I ask. But then again, hi-fi is about as important to me as Physics 2.

Maetryx here,

I just now am upgrading my system, and I fell in love with the JVC RX-9010VBK. If you go to streetprices you'll find out where it is cheapest.
This JVC unit is just loaded. 100Wx5 with Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. It has an optical digital output for recording to minidisc, and it has a USB port on the front for connection to MP3 players. All the video I/O include S-video connectors. It supports multi-room speaker setups. It just plain rocks. All for 299.99 or so.

#2 is the only logical option. Unless you think that spending even more money on sh!tty components is a good idea :) However, i wouldn't recommend the Xbox as a DVD player. I'm sure it doesn't suck, but i'm also sure that it can't compare to good DVD players, even the reasonably priced ones. Of course, it depends on your TV too. If it's not that great, you might not even see the difference.

If you want good components for a good price, you can get em. Just go to audioreview.com, make a list of components that you can afford, then filter out those with ratings of below 4/5, and keep bringing that up until you only have a handful left. Then view each one and filter out those that are missing features that you need. Good luck!

Options are good....but it's JVC *BLEH* From what I've read from reviews, their 100 watts are a bit dodgy...any reviews on the net for this amp?
