If you play a 7.1 track through an AVR that is set up with a 5.1 speaker configuration, the AVR will simply mix the rear channels with your surrounds. You don't lose any sound. Of course, you do lose the potentially better spacial definition that 7.1 can provide IF you have a properly set up 7.1 system. As noted in another reply, a poorly set up 7.1 setup can screw up your sound. Unfortunately, many 7.1 systems are forced into areas where they are not appropriate because most room configurations don't easy allow speaker placement directly behind the listener's seating position (often because a sofa is backed up against a wall). 3 feet distance is generally considered the minimum. If you get closer than they, the rears may be emphasized too much compared to the other speakers.

That's what I always thought. Someone in the Roku forums was complaining about M-Go Vudu not being able to downmix 7.1 tracks to 5.1 for some reason....

I actually use 3 subs in my 7.3 home theater adjusted with Audysey MultEQ xt and the subs complement each other very nicely . I can't tell where the bass is coming from and when I want to listen to rock, I crank the bass way up. The resulting sound shakes the entire house. Very nice.

See my sig to see what my system looks like. I have made some change since but essentially this is my audio system.

7.3? Whoa.

Oh..... Crap. It has 2EQ and not MultEQ. F**k.

:\

Course it was one of the better deals I could find.... Manually tuning the Sub shouldn't be that difficult?

THX Select2 Plus sounds cool.

Will just have to hook it up and see. ;)

I should specify I want to keep the budget below $330 total.

The Onkyo TX-NR616 is the #1 bestseller on accessories4less.com

It will be here Tomorrow so I can hook it up, update the firmware and read up on how to manually tune the Sub. It shouldn't be that difficult right? I should give it a few days of testing before coming to a conclusion.

Then if for some reason the Receiver does not perform how I'd like then I guess I can see if the Denon AVR-1913 is still available or if Amazon will price match?

I do plan to calibrate my setup with like the Disney WOW Calibration disc.

Or should I just return it and snag the Denon? Advice?

I don't think you can go wrong with the Denon. I wouldn't worry about the 90 vs 100 watt power issue you noted in a prior post. I seriously doubt those speakers will stress the ability of the Denon to supply power. You would have to be seriously cranking the volume up beyond reference volumes for it to make any difference and I suspect the speakers would give out before the AVR.

From an audio perspective, the one thing I note that the Denon has that the Onkyo doesn't is a level of Audyssey room correction that will EQ your subwoofer. The Onkyo won't do this (but it isn't too difficult to do by hand if you have a cheap SPL meter from radio shack).

I don't know about video differences (such as upscaling abilities). If you watch a bunch of DVDs or standard def stuff, you should do a more careful comparison.

Yeah I'm starting to think it would be best to just return this and go with a Denon.

I thought I had gotten a good deal but over looked the different versions of Audyssey. I could try manually tuning the Sub....

I didn't even know the bad press about Onkyo until I looked at the comments of a review however it seems the latest firmware has fixed all these issues but I guess it took a long time to actually fix the issues.

Amazon is now selling the AVR-E400 for $300 gonna snag it. Should I extend the Warranty for two years for $12?

That unit is the replacement for the 1913...

$300 if new and not a refurb is a great deal. At $12 for two years of warranty, I'd do that...I'd also look up that company first, many warranties aren't worth crap when you need them.

It has only one HDMI out that does work for most people.

I almost bit the bullet on Amazon's $300 Yamaha 573.

If $300 is your budget I'd snag that AVR-E400. If you can push to $400 there are better options.

Being your speaker choice (and they may be great, I have no idea), I'd get cheaper than more expensive and then work it out with future upgrades.

I'd definitely check out accessories4less more.

Speakers are in the same realm as the Energy Talk Classics.

In the end I just want surround sound for my room. I don't care for all the other stuff like audio streaming services and video up-conversation.

I could push $400 but I think it would be more worth it for the Living room?

I did check out Accessories4Less.com last I checked they had the 1913.

Then I heard Frys had the E400 but Frys is like an hour drive. So I called and the website would have matched and shipped it then heard BestBuy should price match but they told me only within 25 Miles and someone said unless you get someone who will do it anyways then found out Amazon also is offering this deal and since I have a free Month of Prime anyways.... The Warranty is by SmartGuard http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The YAMAHA RX-V573BL is $279.99 on sale at NewEgg.

Was just about to hit the checkout button on Amazon for the E400. With hearing how good Audyssey MultEQ is.

Since I mistakenly got the Onkyo TX-NR616 which only has Audyssey 2EQ.

You have to pick your battle. Auto-calibration only is as good as your components.

My now old HTR-5960 does a great job in my 5.1 Klipsch (Academy/Quartets and SS2.5)and Emotiva (Ultra 12) house.

I will give the Denon AVR-E400 a try and see how it sounds. All else fails I can always upgrade later.

I just want something easy and hope the MultEQ does it's job. :p

I am still learning the ins and outs of new Receivers.

I still love my E400. It's been fantastic. And yes, I bought a refurb from Accessories. I cant imagine I'll need to upgrade for years, since it is 4k future proof.

Cool thanks for the positive review on it.

The entertainment center I got wasn't up to snuff for what I wanted so I ordered a better one and am waiting on it. Hope to get my Speakers hooked up within the next week.
