Audio question

Can anyone tell me if the sound card is the basis for quality of music or does a program like winamp or windows media player have an effect on the quality. I have a generic sound card that I'm going to replace. I can listen to the same song on winamp and windows media player and depending on the song, one program may sound better: or is it my imagination?

well programs like winamp have the ability to adjust the equalizers and such to make bass, treble and other things effect the mp3 sound.
