audio not working on new build

hello all:

I recently completed a new build and am working through a slew of driver-related problems (I'm using xp 64). Of these, the most pressing is related to audio, or, to be more specific, a total lack of audio. I want to use headphones (I have no speakers) but no sound comes out: when I go to "sound and Audio devices" it lists 'no audio devices' and 'no playback devices.' I have installed the most recent drivers for Realtek, the audio manager provided by my mobo, to no avail, and google searches reveal an endless number of (thus far) dead ends.

Any suggestions?

I'm using Gigabyte's MA790x-ud4p mobo.

As long as you run XP 64 you will continue have nothing but problems from the system. Mainly due to lack of driver support for the OS. Get yourself a copy of Vista 64 and you will be good to go.

I'm running an MSI 790X board with onboard Realtek. Same "no playback device" error in XP 32 bit. Not even latest drivers on MSI's site help. Works fine in Win7 64 bit though. Threw in a SoundBlaster X-FI which worked in XP, but not Win7 (tried XP and Vista drivers).

My guess is it is a bad set of drivers for the Realtek and XP.
