Audio headache. Need help.

My daughter's computer will only play sound from apps/games that are installed on the HDD.
If the game/app requires info to be read from the CD ROM then the game/app will crash.
This happens with ALL CD-ROM apps. So Quake runs fine but TheSims crashes.
If I disable audio in the command line TheSims works but not having sound sucks.

I even thought maybe her CD ROM or Sound Card was going bad so I replaced both of them but the problem still exists.

The system:
C366
Diamond C300 MB
Memorex 48X CDROM(New)
64MB PC100 RAM
A-Open AW320 Sound Card(New)
WD 10.2 HDD
Voodoo3 2000
WIN98 Not SE

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

She has DX7.0 and so do I on my system and I don't have any trouble. I will give 7.0a a shot on her system though. It's worth a try.
