Someone needs to take them (audiophiles) back to the bench so they can take a peek under the cover of their amplifier. You may be surprised at what you see wiring wise between final stage and output terminals!
Heck we pulled the cover of one of our Yorkville LS1208 subs (2000W 18" scoop pro audio) and found the wiring inside to be quite wimpy. I'll find a pic and post it! Yet the SJO running between these stacks and the K10 amplifiers (12kW 2Ωis 10 gauge for seventy feet!

The longer the run, the thicker the wires you do actually need.
10AWG wire has 1.018ohm/1000'. So 2x70' (a complete circuit) would have about 0.14 ohms of resistance, and with a 2 ohm load that means that the wire is sucking down 7% of the power from the amp.
For reference:
14AWG wire is 2.575 ohms, and 22AWG is 16.46 ohm.
So for longer runs, it does make sense. The shorter the run, the less sense it makes. And in an amp, you're talking a couple inches. It is diminishing returns though. In the above example, going to a 6AWG wire would result in getting 97% if the power instead of 93%, while going to 14AWG would result in only getting 82%. 14 to 10AWG isn't a massive increase in price, even if it is significant. But 10 to 6 is.
