Audio editing...

I have a question about editing mp3s using tools like SoundForge or Cooledit, whatever. Is there a way to separate lyrics from music in a song? I can't imagine there would be a filter or anything like that (is there? ) but is there a way to do it, period? I'd be willing to spend some time on it.

Somebody let me know...

You can try checking out www.analogx.com . I think they may have Direct X plug-in that sorta kinda works. I wouldn't count on excellent results, but you never know.

You'll have to excuse the "newbie" question but I haven't done much stuff with computer sound editing -- "DirectX plugin" means what?

Nope, ya can't. It would be great, as there have been many songs I have needed for mixes, but have some stupid lyrics in 'em. I ave tried to find a way, but it is ONE file...the computer can't know what sounds are people and what sounds are instruments. It is just like seperating a sounds from a guitar from a song. Find the instrumental...there usually is one.

Actually, a &quot;Direct X plug-in&quot; is a program that you run using Sound Forge or CEP or anything like that (most pro-level editors use direct x plug ins). There are tons of effects plug ins (eq, reverb, filters, etc) available. And I would agree, there really isn't a good way to remove vocals from a track, but it's worth a try.

best bet would be find a midi of the song and then convert it to wave using something like wingroove or you can do a realtime conversion in cooledit.. search for the exact method to do that, too lazy now.

The local highschool just had their junior/senior variety show, and the songs that most of the people were singing to had vocals in them. We just used the WinAmp DFX plugin and it did a fair job of it; you could still hear the vocals faintly in the background when broadcasted on the main sound system, but it wasn't that bad. It would have been better if I had songs with instrumental only...
