I generally leave my computer on all the time, and put it to sleep when I'm away. However, in the recent past I've had to deal with a strange audio issue in Vista the forces me to restart the computer.
My audio setup involves a pair of Swan D2.1SE's + woofer connected to an Onkyo receiver. I have an TOSLINK running from the receiver to the S/PDIF input on the motherboard in the rear of the PC. The hi-def on-board audio is provided by RealTek (I also have an X-Fi installed, but it's in the front and I don't want clutter. It's there for the MIDI input when I get digital instruments.)
The problem occurs after leaving my computer on for a while. When I play audio in iTunes or elsewhere, the sound begins to clip or stutter for several seconds. It happens in intervals and isn't constant, but is still highly annoying. Task Manager reports normal CPU and RAM usage, and restarting Firefox (memory leak perhaps) or logging off and back on my account do not help. The only solution is to restart the computer.
Google reports that other people have had this issue, but I can't find a solution. One possible source is wireless NIC cards (I have a LinkSys). I don't know if that helps. How do I update RealTek audio drivers? Do I go through RT are do I have to do something with the BIOS on my abit IP35 Pro?
Edit: Still have the clipping issues.
