Audio CD playback probs...just started

Hey guys, how 'ya doin?

Just when U think you're 'da man and have got this whole pc-hardware thing down pat, something comes along and just baffles you.

This prob just started on my GF's computer. I built it 4 her a few months ago. The problem occurs when trying to play audio CD's.

System parts:
Iwill KK266 (using onboard audio)
850 TBird (no OC)
128mb Kingston RAM (PC133, no OC)
Cen-Dyne 52x CDR

The 3-pin audio cable is connected to the onboard audio controller, but I have "digital audio" enabled in the CDR properties. The problem just started, so it's not the cable thing.

When trying to play an audio CD, you get no sound. But if you change songs real fast (double click another song), or move the slider over to play "later in the song" you get audio.

It's NOT the speakers. I can play .wavs from the HD just fine. The volume is up, nothing is muted in the "mixer". I checked everything I know. Double checked the cable, etc.

You can get the CD to play...but you have to play with clicking on different things until it decides it wants to go. ONce it goes, it plays fine. It's getting it to start that's the problem.

I have "auto insert" checked. She's using WinMP 7.1. It was working fine up until yesterday.

I noticed that the CDRom takes what I consider to be an abnormally long time to get the information to the MB. You put the CDin, door closes, drive spins up....but it just spins...for about 15 seconds, then you can "see" the music playing in Win MP, i.e. the slider moves right slowly and the timer is counting up, but no sound.

Is the CD Rom bad? Help.

If you are using original Audio CD's and this is the problem, before trashing the CD Drive try cleaning the lens first. If symptoms persists it could be a bad drive. I'll try it on a different system first before replacing it though.

I'd be suspicious of the CDROM, but rule out software problems first:

1. Try a different program besides Winamp -- or else maybe reinstall or repair Winamp.

2. Within Winamp, try changing from Digital Playback to Analog, or vice versa. Here are the Winamp docs on this:

----------------------------
To access the CD Audio tab
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click CD Audio.
The following options are listed on the CD Audio tab.

Digital playback
Specifies whether to use digital or analog playback. Select this check box to send digital audio to your speakers. Clear the check box to send analog audio to your speakers. If your hardware does not support digital playback, analog audio might be used even if the Digital playback check box is selected. When analog audio is used, visualizations do not work, and your equalizer and SRS WOW settings do not affect the analog audio.

Thanks guys, I'll give that a try. I'm confused though.

1. The CDR is brand new..well, it was new in March, when I bought it. I guess it's possible it could be bad already?

2. I tried DLing WinMP 7.1 again last night, but the WindozeUpdate site wouldn't let me b/c it detected it as installed already. Workaround for this? Thanks, you guys are da best.
