i have a male to male stereo cable that i run from my mp3 player to my car head unit.

when i 1st got the cable, everything worked fine. after a few weeks or so, it developed a staticy/whine to it.

figured i needed a new cable so i went and bought a gold plated cable this time.

this one was staticy/whiny from the beginning. it seems to go away or lessen after about 20 minutes of use though.

is it a bad cable? bad or dirty jacks on the devices? or what?

You've got a ground loop for sure. Check what you're plugging it into, and it's ground.

Worst comes to worst, get one of those inline ground loop eliminators (most are rca, so you'd need a bunch of ghetto adapters).
