Audigy + XP + Update Drivers

Alrighty, I have an Audigy and XP. After setting up XP and installing the drivers off of the Audigy CD, everything works fine. However, when I update the drivers with those found on CLab's website (both the 10-25-01 set and the 1-22-02 set) it disables all my system sounds. When you look at the sound properties in control panel all the sounds are assigned still, and they play fine if you test them. I've had one format that you could re-selec tteh "windows default" scheme, hit ok, and everything would work until you rebooted. On my current format not even that does it- you can't get windows to play the sounds at all. I can hear other sounds just fine- winamp, games, etc., just not the system sounds. If there is a system beep or something, it comes through the speaker, like I don't have a sound card installed.

Thoughts?

8.1 (and it's included with xp), but I don't think it'd be directx (unless the basic gui stuff was controlled by direct sound, which I don't think it is...). It's not that sounds won't play, it's just that they won't play when an event happens... my best guess is that the drivers mess something up in the registry or something, but I don't know where to start there...
