Audigy vs. Live!

I have an older SB Live! 5.1 that has served its purpose quite well. I was considering an upgrade to the Audigy 2. What other comparable products are out there that I could compare? I'm specifically looking for something with SPDIF-like outputs so I can connect it to a Dobly Digital decoder.

I haven't done in-depth research into sound cards for a while, but from what I've seen from reading about new products, I haven't seen anything (consumer level) that really comes close to the Audigy 2 in terms of quality and features. Connecting an Audigy 2 to a dolby digital decoder should provide you with some very, very nice results.

I also am looking for a new sound card, for my HTPC. The Fortissimo III looks good (7.1 support) also the new pure-digital (santa cruz) card the SoundXplosion. Anyone know anything about this new card? Seems pretty sweet with optical in/out and the versajack. I was looking for something with optical out that didnt require a front faceplate like the SB Live! or Audigy Platinums. Just curious as to what others have or know about performance.

Im also in your situation, I plan no getting either the Audigy 2 or M-Audios Revolution. Anyone know much about the revolution?

I'm insterested in the M-Audio Revolution and have heard of a few NDA's (so many come and go) but for now the upgrade from SBlive for performance/value is the Audigy duece IMO... I still us the 1 with the Live Drive II and I'm OK wit dat

If you have high quality speakers, get the Audigy 2.
I think I have a pretty decent set of 5.1 speakers that should do the job.

So we have:
Audigy 2
Fortissimo III
(santa cruz based card) from SoundXplosion
M-Audio Revolution
Hercules Game Theater XP (Edit)

Any other ones I should include in my search?

I went from Live non-5.1 Mp3 to Audigy Mp3, now to Audigy 2 Platinum, every upgrade there was a noticable difference in quality, not nothing extravagant tho.

😉 Philips make some decent cards too ... and don't forget nVidia's nForce if you fancy a new mobo LOL!

Just bought a new motherboard not too long ago. Not planning on upgrading it anytime soon.
