this is just a copy|paste from what i mailed to creative.
needless to say the guy was an idiot and didnt help in the slightest.

Problem Description:
i am building a comp for a friend. he has nearly the same thing as me. a Shuttle AK31 (AMD board, VIA 266A),
Radeon, and the Audigy. it is a brand new HD with a fresh 98SE install. with only
the VIA 4in1 and the Radeon drivers. everytime, the audigy install freezes on the "Audigy
Signal Processor" (at 97%). its a hard lock and i have to reset it. BUT, apon reboot windows finds everything and
installs seemingly ok (the emu, the joy port, and audigy). i can play a wave file without error. although
it took some tryin to get that. it usually will play the wav, only without any actual sound with no error. like

windows is ok, but the hardware isnt. also, even though the sound is playing fine, the volume
control in the lower right is crossed out. both it, and the windows volume control are greyed. i cant move a
slider or mute/unmute. Giants loads fine, but crashes when clicking off the
title screen. obviously when attempting to load/play sound. now i have tried playing Giants on another comp
(with a Live) and there is the ErrFailedSND. the game looks for the audigy. so it appears that it finds it
(bios or whatever) when loading (like the wav in windows) but dies when it gets more hardware specific (my
interpretation anyway).
Error Messages Received:
not really. only thing is the creative stuff. like i said above, a wav files fine and sounds fine but
Giants crashes. Surround Mixer doesnt do anything but flash on the screen. barely loading.
the AudioHQ gives an error about the drivers not being loaded properly and needing to reinstall. despite windows
having no probs in the device manager and being able to play wav's.
Troubleshooting Steps Performed Thus Far:
installed drivers several times, tried the update (which also crashed at the 97%), tried multiple PCI slots, tried
my card which acted the exact same (so no reason to put his in my comp), removed all other cards (modem and NIC).
all onboard junk is disabled in the bios.
and i have no clue what else to try. i have had no problems with my card. its worked great for
the few months ive had it. i really dont believe its hardware and reinstalling 98 seems futile considering
there is *nothing* other than the VIA's, DX8.1 and the Radeon drivers installed.
"
now messin with it today. ive got another first.
when i removed it from device manager, it rebooted.
