Hi Techies,

I have the audigy extigy soundcard and I've tried every possible thing I can think of to get rid of this crackling, popping noise that I keep getting. I went to the soundblaster site and followed their recommendations such as plugging the usb cable of the soundcard into different usb ports, etc. I also downloaded all of the new drivers and everything from their site but that didn't seem to do it either. Has anyone ever had similar experiences?

It shouldn't be a memory problem or a speed problem because I have an AMD 1.4ghz processor and 512mb of ddr memory. I run windows xp pro. If you have any suggestions/tips, I'd greatly appreciate it. I have no idea how to fix this.

Thank You,
Mike

Updating the VIA (4in1) Chipset drivers usually takes
care of the distorted sound issue with SB Live! & Audigy cards.

Thanks Lilith Tech. I'm not sure if I updated the correct drivers, but I went into the device manager and updated the VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) and that didn't seem to fix it. I found other things in the device manager that had VIA written in them, but then when I right clicked and tried to do an "update driver" the computer didn't find any new drivers.

Do you have any other suggestions, or how do you update the via chipset drivers that you mentioned?

Thanks werk and lilith tech. I went to that site and updated my drivers. I have the epox 8k7a+ mobo. Still having the problem though. It may be memory related too, because it skips really bad when I open/close up a program like outlook. But that's weird cuz I don't really have any other programs running and I don't remember having this problem in the past.

Have anymore advice? :) I appreciate it.

Hello sir!

I had the same exact problem with my audigy internal. I highly doubt that it is a speed problem with your system in that it seems that you have plenty of power to do sound processing. What speakers are you using? I am using the Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 and the following never fails. No matter what I do, when I do a fresh install of Windows XP and install the drivers off the cd that came with the card I get a bunch of popping in a couple of the speakers. However, when I run the driver update executable it seems to clear it right up :( I know that doesnt sound like something all that helpful, but you may want to nuke all your driver files (meticulously go through and make sure they are all gone) and then reinstall from cd and then update using the file from creative's site. Sometimes its something really lame like that. I know that Audigy based hardware can be very finiky.

Hi Lairans...

I went to the soundblaster site yesterday and downloaded their drivers for the extigy:

Driver

Sound Blaster Extigy Application Web Patch
Date: 4/5/2002
Size: 2.25 MBytes

Sound Blaster Extigy Driver/Firmware Update
Date: 4/7/2002
Size: 8.83 MBytes

When you say to "nuke all of your driver files" which ones should I get rid of in particular? I can try this.

Oh...by the way. I have the cambridge fps2000 speakers.

I don't think I'm ever gonna by another soundblaster soundcard. Every one I've owned I think has given me problems. I wonder how much of my life I've wasted messing with these suckers. :)

I just mean go through and get rid of any files related to creative or extigy. Sometimes even when you uninstall all the files, it doesnt get rid of everything so when you install the new drivers there is still a file that is causing that popping. I am kind of reaching for answers here, but dont wanna leave ya hanging there. I actually also considered purchasing a different brand sound card, only trouble is that Creative seems to have most of the market share for games with their technologies being implimented in games. eh -- oh well.
