Audigy 2 is FUBAR'd up

i noticed when i was setting up the quake 4 demo, and now setting up the full retail version of fear that i am only allowed to chose between software sound options which is odd since i have a Audigy 2 which can do all the EAX stuff

my on board audio is also creative based (MSI K8N SLI Plat) but thats turned off in the bios.

anyway the card is definately there and its definately working, im listening to music right now. and if i go to the eax console i can apply all the effects, use the microphone etc, can even use nero to record what im playing! (ie the audigy is recording its own output)

i CANT , however, install or re-install the new audigy drivers since they believe that there is no Audigy product present on my machine. i mean WTF?

My A2 has really flipped out here the last few weeks. I wouldn't install the driver update (kept coming back with an incorrect hardware error) so I had to Un-Rar it and install the drivers separately. It kept shutting down my anti-virus, and a lot of times I turn on my computer and don't notice the little red X on the icon right away. I had to reinstall cause I picked up some sort of virus while it was doing it. I disabled everything Creative on start-up, which fixed not only that problem but also some major problems I had with burning CDs. I'm not sure if it's something to do sp2, though I upgraded that a while before the onset of most of the problems. It's definitely Creative's poor driver support for my config, I'm seriously contemplating going back to on-board.

lol i havent got a choice....they got a creative chip on my motherboard too!

ill try installing seperatley

ive just removed all the creative stuff and reinstalled but its still the same...im stuck with software sound in FEAR! abd quake 4!

I had to recommend doing OS reinstalls, but if you really wanted it that bad, backup your data, take out any hardware that isn't required for the OS install. Re-install windows, put in your audigy sound card, and it should work. If not possible hardware failure?

Hey, I just reread your initial post. Here's what you need to do:
1. Download one of the new updates, not using the auto update feature.
2. Open the file using WinRAR or similar program. Extract to a temporary folder.
3. Go to the directory "Drivers" in the temp directory, within is a setup.exe program. Run that (dble-click).
4. Reboot.

There are several setup programs within the archive, make sure to use the one in the "Drivers" folder.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't take more time to read, I was tired when I wrote that initially. It's actually a fairly common issue right now. Also, if you have NAV or you start to notice burn issues with burning CD-As, disable both the CTSysVol and SBDrvDet (I'd disable this one anyway, probably both) from msconfig.

You don't have to reinstall your antivirus, you just need to prevent any Creative junk from starting when you boot. just run 'msconfig' then go to startup. ANYTHING that is Creative, uncheck it then restart. This happens all the time to my Norton AVirus on new installs.

I had to reinstall cause I got infected when NAV was disabled, couldn't remove the infection. The NAV was serving as my firewall, I got some form of malicious script. I kept getting pop-ups despite a lot of effort. In the end it was easier to reformat/reinstall than trying to track it down. I didn't want to install anything except the drivers, but as it turned out I had to turn on my sub through the Creative software which meant I did as you suggested (installed it, set it, then disabled it). That and the topic of this thread are the 2 new probs that have popped up recently, the CD burning issue was something that popped up w/ sp2 that went away on disabling the Creative auto starts.
